I do agree with Bob in that even if the DJRD is not self-evidently the original one (if this means the first one), it owns -to my ears- the character of a song of its own, to the point that I would also tend to consider it as a different song with respect to the MOA version, also because the latter, just as "Love or money", had a sort of an embryonic form, maybe also due to the dimming into the LA Express wall-of-sound-arrangements... (not that I displease the latter ones, I could hypnotize myself with a loop of the vocals at the end of YTMOIAAR) Is it the roaring of the bass, the neatness of the guitar and the drums, the voice which echoes the bass melody or vice versa? I don't know... just my two cents Vincenzo May your skies be blue Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2011 17:12:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Original version of Jericho? ... As for Jericho, I think it would be tough to argue that the 1977 studio version would be considered the "original". She released it on MOA, then performed it on all of her 1976 shows. By the time she released the studio version on DJRD it was sort of the 'final' version. I will also add that the DJRD version is my favorite. It's polished and refined. And I agree that the choice of musicians and instrumentation on the studio version give the song a fleshed-out yet fresh sound that fits in nicely with the rest of DJRD. I always wondered what took her so long to put 'Jericho' on a a studio album and whatever happened to 'For Love or Money'. Is there a studio track of that song somewhere in the Joni archives? Was it not deemed worthy of a finished, studio treatment or she did she never find the proper slot for it in one of her albums? At least we have an 'official' live release of the song. And I agree with Vincenzo about those vocals at the end of 'You Turn Me On (I'm a Radio)' on MOA. Pure magic that you can easily get lost in. I seem to recall having read about recording the album and how it derived from collecting material in order to fulfil a contract, which could explain why the song had been "covered" in DJRD and yet not unveil the reason why it had been selected in spite of "Love or money"... Yet, then why not one of the many unreleased songs? Why not a new one? Besides, I seem to recall also that the late Pastorius said that those were days of some "confusion" (the recklessness of the album?) because of "acid, booze and..." or some other "opening mind promoter" and that he had to "pick up the pieces"... I'm sure that checking the archives on the JM site we could find some more precise information...
