The folks who garden there often give the extra produce and flowers to local food banks. Well the Masons are in talks to expand their building and take back the vacant lot for that expansion. meaning the community garden will be gone. A couple of "farmers" on the land remarked to the news reporter that "it seems like all they (the owners/Masons) want want to do is pave paradise and put up a parking lot." Mingus would have approved of the service, even though it was held in a church. This church is a landmark here in town. Very small in a beautiful neighborhood. He would have loved the music too. When the service started, "A Case of You" was playing with slides of Mingus showing on the screen. Those who spoke did a great job of telling old stories. His little nieces and nephews sang a sweet little song in honor of their Uncle David. Then "The Circle Game" was played with more slides of David. My favorite part was world renowned flutist Kat Epple played. She has won several awards, and we're very fortunate to have her living in the area. Both Davids were friends with her. When David approached her about playing at the service, she said definitely yes. Even though she knows who Joni Mitchell is, she had never played any of her music. I was shocked when she put together a medley of different Joni songs. It was beautiful. After more people spoke, the service closed with more slides and Joni singing "My Best To You." It was a beautiful service, evening though I cried nonstop. Jimmy, i remember the first time we talked and you told me about David's courage and grace. I had read his posts and he is//was/will be definitely someone i want to meet, as each of you is. the beauty of this group is that i feel as if i do know him from what is shared here. i know he deserved staunch friends like you, ed and david. i send up my prayers, and tears, and a little laughter at the absurdity of it all, as i did with smurf, even though i never got to meet either of them. i know, i know, we're just particles of change... much much love, and my sincere condolences, lesli On Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 11:20 AM, wrote: > Oh sweet Patti, > > Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the email that David wrote to you back > in 2007. I've heard the SHM remasters of Led Zeppelin's and Prince's albums and I was very pleased with what I heard, so naturally I was pretty excited about these. I only purchased Hejira even though I wanted DJRD as well, but at $28 each on these I couldn't really justify spending that much on more than one. Anyways, the packaging. It's very nicely done. It looks like a pretty faithful reproduction of the original vinyl. It has a plastic outer sleeve keeping everything clean. The case is made from cardstock, the CD sleeve is kind of a sturdy-ish magazine type paper and the booklet is regular paper. The lyrics are spread throughout the outer case (in English) in some seriously tiny type. All of this is very similar to the HDCD releases. The booklet is half Japanese, half English. The first few pages of the booklet are in Japanese and it appears to be some kind of review from this year (there's a date of 2011 at the end of it). Next are the lyrics in English and then in Japanese. The Japanese lyrics have what appears to be footnotes at the end of some songs explaining certain references (Big Apple, Boom Boom Pachyderm, Winn-Dixie, etc). I don't speak Japanese so I'm really curious to know what they say. As far as the sound quality... it's difficult to say. Joni's vocals are nice and up-front throughout, and they really soar during Refuge of the Roads. Her breathing-in on "I've got a blue motel room" at the end of BMR is noticeable and I don't recall this on the HDCD release. Percussion is noticeably more in-the-mix throughout the album. Jaco's bass seems a little cleaner in the mix and not so overdubbed. Some of Joni's guitar parts are also clearer (especially during Furry Sings The Blues and Refuge of the Roads). Black Crow, oddly enough, seems a real standout as far as this remaster. It sounds almost like it was recently recorded (I noticed that too with the Paprika Plains remix). So is it worth purchasing? While I think the job on the artwork was really well done nothing really encourages me to say "go and buy it." The HDCD release is really nicely done, despite the rather blah artwork reproduction. I'm very curious to know how the other SHM remasters stand up. If anyone else purchased them I'd love to hear your thoughts. Peace out, Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Apr 2011 20:47:51 -0400 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: Re: Hejira SHM-My thoughts Just got word that my SHM-CD's of For the Roses and Hissing were shipped yesterday from Japan.
