To contact him; randall.king@freepress.mb.ca The southern California lesbian couple at the centre of The Kids Are All Right never once bring up the subject of Proposition 8, the 2008 legal suckerpunch that effectively scuttled gay marriage in that state. Director Lisa Cholodenko (who cowrote the script with Stuart Blumberg) isn't here to make any strident noises about the "issue" of gay marriage. In fact, this smart, well performed comedy-drama rather ingeniously makes the point that a family with two moms is just as normal as any other family, assuming the definition of "normal" is understood to entail a certain amount of miscommunication, conflict, pain and betrayal. Nic (Annette Bening) is a doctor whose longtime relationship with her partner Jules (Julianne Moore) is in the midst of some middle-age doldrums. Nic is the breadwinner, while Jules tends to flit from one start-up business to the next. The love is there, but the sex (wherein the couple employ gay male porn as an arousal too) is decidedly not the kind of action you'd see on girl-girl pay-per-view. (Nic frostily refers to lesbian porn as "inauthentic" anyway). Evidently, their priorities lie with their two kids. Joni (Mia Wasikowska) is the 18-year-old blond beauty named for Joni Mitchell and preparing to leave the nest for college. As a favour to her younger brother Laser (Josh Hutcherson(, she agrees to contact their mutual biological father, w hose contribution to their existence was strictly as an anonymous sperm donor. But once contacted, the donor, Paul (Mark Ruffalo), a successful restaurateur, is gently jolted from the state of self-satisfied complacency that accompanies a sunny bachelor existence. He agrees to meet the two teens. And when their moms accidentally learn they've contacted bio-dad, they insist on meeting him too. Unfortunately, Paul, hip and well-meaning though he may be, makes a tad too much impact as a satellite of this nuclear family. Let's just say that when Jules discovers in mid-life that she's bi-curious (the male port thing may be a bit of a tip-off there), the family is destined for some shock waves. In capturing the realities of family life, Cholodenko captures in glances and everyday verbal exchanges a portrait that is more recognizable than you'd find in mainstream (not to say heterosexual) family movies such as Grown Ups. Bening is adept as usual, tweaking the role of an understanding progressive, enlightened California mom with undercurrents of patronizing and disapproval. Moore, w ho has projected a chillier persona in films of late (chloe, Blindness), offers up something warmer and more human, convincingly finding amour fou in the most unlikeliest of places. And Ruffalo is rather perfectly cast as an in-over-his-head nice guy attractive enough to derail a longtime relationship. On that subject: Twenty years ago, no self-respecting lesbian filmmaker would have suggested such a love triangle was possible. (Hetero male directors such as Chasing AMy's Kevin Smith wouldn't have a problem with it, of course). But while Cholodenko may be in trouble with some of her lesbian sisters, she is to be commended for acknoledging this entirely plausible relationship could happen in the shifting sands of human sexuality. And in any case, she does this with subversive intent. After all, it is the straight male Paul who finds himself longing for connection with this close-knit two-mom family, a witty inversion of the notion (presumably held by the people who helped get Prop. 8 passed) that gay couples are the ones who constitute a threat to the family unit. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2011 13:30:51 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers 134 - Marching on Hi everyone and welcome to another edition of Joni Mitchell covers, the last one I'll be doing for awhile as I head out for China in a couple of days and I won't have access to my music collection. But this is not a bad one to go out on, it's got a lot of great stuff on it. These are all relatively new tracks, the Joaquin Diaz is actually an old recording but was remastered and re-released last year. Michael Aaron sent me another recording, last time it was Tea Leaf Prophecy, this time around he hits another deep track. Thanks for that Michael! We have a non-English recording (A Case Of You in Czech), and Marc Copland's THIRD cover of Rainy Night house. Man does he love that song. At least he threw a couple more in for good measure. Anyway, here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/4koq3fo And here's the full tracklist: 1. D'Agostina & Oxley - All I Want 2. Angela Campbell & Erik van Eetvelde - River 3. I've downloaded it and will listen as soon as I can. So how long will you be away for? I seem to remember something like 6 months, is that right? Isn't it scary to think that the mountain of Joni covers will grow out of control while you're away? In any case, I wish you all the best with this exciting adventure. It would be great if you could send us (NJC, of course) some reports on what you encounter! And who knows, you may even have some JC moments, which would be fantastic to hear about!
