The introduction alone on poetry and lyrics should be enough to bring Joni to ecstasy. She and Stephen like very much alike on the subject. Good company, indeed! A great read if your nightstand is empty. It can be a totally pointless and meaningless label. But don't you think there is really quite a strong Joni similarity in this song? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yqPiATRUjU Paul posted it a while ago. (Laura Marling singing a new song 'Flicker and Fail' - a reworking of a song written by her father - at the recent BBC Folk Awards) And there is a second way in which I can understand people talking about "the new Joni", and that is that Joni was so ground breaking in her sound, that indeed I think a lot of musicians now would not sound the way they do if it wasn't for Joni. They may not even be aware of the influence, but Joni has become part of the music culture and they have caught those waves. (So yes, in a way it would be like the example you gave of the Beatles. Maybe we would never have had the phenomenon of 4 guys-in-a-band, and some of that sound, if it hadn't been for the Beatles. So in that way, the label of "new Beatles" would be correct, even if they never came close to the talent that the Beatles had.) Sorry, it's getting late and I am not really finding the words, but I hope it makes a little sense. I expect we all have. It's like 4 blokes in a band who play lead, rhythm and bass guitars plus a drummer always being called the 'new Beatles.' It's completely barmy I think. Unimaginative journalism, Having seen Laura Marling on tour last year, I thought she was really great and her band were super. I think I went to see her after Paul talked about her on JMDL and saw she was playing at Cambridge. She sounds very English to me, with some of June Tabor, to my old ears. But what do I know? I just think it's great that someone so young is writing some great songs with some insightful lyrics - and Goodbye England Covered in Snow is a wonderful song as Paul says. Tonight I am listening to the CD where Joni picked the music. I'm pretty sure it's called "Artist's Choice- Joni Mitchell". In it, Joni chose music that influenced her or stuff that she just loves, whether it came before her or after her. It's worth the price of the CD just to have the liner notes, in my opinion. Anyway, on the Miles Davis track, "It Never Entered My Mind", I noticed that the drummer is using brushes. Other than the BSN orchestral CD, can anyone think of a Joni track where the drummer used brushes? It's a texture that she hasn't used much, if at all. I'll have to go back through "Mingus" to see if there are brushes on that title.
