I was so excited when this came out on James' album, That's Why I'm Here. The whole album is one of my favourites. James reciprocated on Joni's album, Dog Eat Dog. On the song, Good Friends. Not sure if they then helped out Don Henley. Does anyone know. The video is very grainy but it sure does look like Joni and Don, maybe from (judging on Joni's hair and beret) sometime in the 1980s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8KJ_MQ-tt4&feature=related Wow, never knew of this one! Then Julius mentioned it on the jmdl Facebook page. He's not on this list right now, so he asked me to let you know about it. Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) has broken up with her boyfriend and Jenna, the psychotic singer, takes her out to a nightclub where she meets a handsome man who is, like Liz, a Star Trek fan. In the background, you can hear music playing and I was quite sure it was someone doing a "Joni" impression. It was a girl singer with a guitar (not shown, just heard) with prhasing that sounded sort of Joni-like, but not a particularly good voice, and I did definitely hear the word "Saskatchewan." Turns out it was Tina herself who wrote a Joni parody called "Paints and Brushes." You can hear it here, separate out from the dialogue in the show, so you can make out the words: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/02/tina_fey_joni_mitchell.html Just one more reason why Tina Fey is awesome and "30 Rock" is a funny and intelligently scripted TV show. Props to Julius for finding this! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2011 19:04:08 +0000 (GMT) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: Re: Journal of American History article Wow, great (and very long) article! It really complements the other article we discussed at great length last October "Feeling Free and Female Sexuality" ( http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2277 ) and also fits in beautifully with the Sheila Weller reading clip that Paul Castle sent us a few days ago in Laurel Canyon back in the day - http://bit.ly/eM28Q3 (I'm still so much enjoying revisiting that one!) It is of course normal and perfectly explainable, but to me it still feels like a surprise when I read those articles and they are like quotes from my own life: the experimenting with relationships, trying to find a relationship that is meaningful even if it is not lasting or exclusive, the transitory character of relationships because of people becoming more mobile (travel etc), the way it was all reflected in songs, etc etc. I remember so vividly, my friends getting married while I still wanted to travel, getting strength from songs where people sang about the value of relationships even if they had to end, but sometimes feeling pangs of panic because my friends seemed to think I was sailing close to the wind and putting heavy burdens on my heart... Well nothing has changed there then, ha! I guess, once a hippy chick, always a hippy chick, for better and for worse... I hope that makes it a bit more legible. But let me guess, we will now most likely have some strange page breaks instead. I never know until I press "send" and see what the computer does with it... She sounds so beautiful on this song! It seems especially poignant to me considering her relationship with James. The other standout in my mind is her back-up vocals with Seal on "If I Could." She sounded just fabulous on that song. And Seal backed her up on "How Do You Stop." Good to hear from you, Mark. I thought about you and the other Australian JMDLers a lot the past few months with all the floods and other events. I hope you all have come through them alright. I'm now thinking of Hell in New Zealand and any others down that way. Hope you are O.K.in that terrible earthquake. Please check in with us if you can. Kakki > Thanks Kakki for this.
