Thank you! I had no idea that Laura Allan has passed away. I remember her from way, way back but not sure how -maybe on some obscure albums, maybe from the CS or N bios - but I remember her. She was so young to have left us. Geez, wish some of us in Cal could have attended the reading, especially with the added input from Joel Bernstein and Guerin's sister. Ahh, wow. I took the Girls Like Us book on a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii on a brief escape from work in summer 2008. I could not put it down. I literally was reading it in the hotel pool, at the pool bar and stayed up all night reading it to the end. It is incredibly readable and hooks you right in. I was also ambivalent towards it in the sense that I thought it revealed TOO much personal and raw information about the girls. It made me cringe at times, but I still couldn't stop reading it. Terra is so fortunate to have been involved with this book. It certainly is a page-turner! They did give it 4 stars. Then there was another Joni mention....hmmm...someone pretty well known covering.........sheesh, I forget which song, was reading this just before lights out last night. So I forget what song andI forget who...so that's really useful, huh? Anyway, I enjoyed stumbling across her name twice in the same issue, in different articles. :) Em ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2011 09:17:00 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: joni mentions in latest RS I'll help you out, Em - the article was regarding a Decemberists' concert. Colin Meloy performed "A Case Of You", saying that someone had sent him the suggestion via Twitter. Fleet Foxes are very much influenced by Joni and CSN, they have said as much in interviews. I love his voice. Their new record (The King Is Dead) is really really good. Any album that is enjoyed by both me AND Richard Flynn must be special. What's cool about watching the video is the reassurance that Joni's music is so ingrained in almost every musician. Thanks Mags. I just listened to 'The King is Dead' for the first time this past weekend and I'll throw my hat in the ring for this one as well. The Decemberists are based in Portland OR. I first heard them about 5 or so years ago when their cd 'Picaresque' was making some waves. I think I posted about them at the time. We went to see them at the Woodland Park Zoo that summer and they put on a good show, performing the epic 'The Mariner's Revenge Song' as their encore. I liked 'Picaresque' but didn't keep up with them. 'Picaresque' is definitely what you'd call folk rock even though the material is written mostly (if not completely) by Meloy, I believe. The liner notes credit him for all of the songwriting on 'The King is Dead'. 'Picaresque' has a definite flavor of British folk music to it. Reminded me of early Steeleye Span, as I recall. I haven't listened to it for a long time. There was a pre-concert article in the Seattle Times when they performed at the Paramount last weekend. Meloy was very frank about the references in 'The King is Dead' to various other artists' music, REM in particular. I can hear echoes of Dylan, Neil Young and Paul Simon in 'The King Is Dead' as well as REM. A really nice collection of songs. It started to sound a bit repetitive toward the end, but then I have only heard it once. I did like what I heard. The video is very grainy but it sure does look like Joni and Don, maybe from (judging on Joni's hair and beret) sometime in the 1980s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8KJ_MQ-tt4&feature=related Wow, never knew of this one!
