Lots of new stuff for me (just got the book - a late Christmas present - but haven't started it yet). Was interested to hear what Sheila had written about the influence of Bay area singer and dulcimer player Laura Allan on Joni's singing style on Blue. > According to Estrella Berosini, the recitative phrasing (a departure from Jonis earlier style) with which Joni would eventually record the songs of 'Blue' sounded much like Laura Allans phrasing. "Take the first four bars of 'California': 'Sittin' in a park in Paris, France' to 'That was just a dream some of us had.' The vocal phrasing over the strum on the dulcimer, the almost-talking style of lyric, the run-on sentences, the childlike detachment: they all couldnt sound more like Laura. The lyric content is all Joni, but it was entirely Joni's version of Laura, and a stunning version. Joni's special brand of magic was so consummate that she could put on someone else's style as if it were a beautiful second-hand dress, and it looked like it had been made just for her." > Don't know much about Laura - other than she regularly played in a club booked by a friend of mine in the mid-seventies called The United State Cafe on Haight Street in San Francisco and I read she made dulcimers and zithers for Joni and Cros and played zither on his "If I Could Only Remember My Name" album. No idea why it's not working for you, Lieve - the direct link (which I'd shortened) is http://fora.tv/2008/05/15/Sheila_Weller_on_Carole_King_Joni_Mitchell_Carly_Simon If this doesn't work try going to the home page - http://fora.tv and typing Sheila Weller in the search bar - If this still doesn't work, I found three 5 min sections of it on Blip TV (*note: you have to endure a short ad first before the video) Joni - http://blip.tv/file/4669073/ Carole - http://blip.tv/file/4669063 Carly - http://blip.tv/file/4669079/ Hope this helps very best PaulC PS Doing a search for "Joni Mitchell" on the Blip TV site (as I often do on video sites I haven't been on before) - I found a version of "Cherokee Louise" by Dutch singer Charlie Dee and her band - http://blip.tv/file/1184730/ - Such a great song!! I first watched this a couple of years ago and intended to post it to the list--but I don't think I ever did. In addition to Sheila's commentary, don't miss Mr. Bernstein towards the end (when he practically takes over the podium--ha!) Of particular interest is his answer to someone's question about Joni's (then) current state of mind. There are three Laura Allan cds available at amazon, two of them quite affordable used. http://www.amazon.com/Laura-Allan/dp/B00006GO4L/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_c I don't own any of them as yet, but you can definitely hear the similarities in the short clips. ---Thanks much also for the other Laura Allan info and link! Also, BTW--don't scream, Lieve, but Estrella Berosini (and many, many others) are on Facebook and are "friends" of Sheila's. I'm not starstruck, but it's pretty cool to be able, in most cases, to read the occasional banter that goes on and often to be able to join in. A few months ago, for instance, I posted a video that Ronee Blakley saw (thru Sheila's page) and commented on. She and Sheila had a slight factual disagreement about it and carried on their discussion on my page. Kinda fun! It's those kinds of light interactions that could never happen on the List that keep me putting up w/the stuff I don't like about FB. (And also why FB could NEVER replace the sort of conversations that take place here.) Not trying to talk you into it--just offering another observation. :-) Terra On Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 12:29 PM, Paul Castle wrote: > >>> http://bit.ly/eM28Q3 > > Lieve wrote: > > > Paul, I'd love to see this, but I can't get the link to work.
