This thread caught my eye due to the fact that I picked up a few hardback copies of Annie's book "Women" a few years ago and immediately forwarded this photo to Les for the website. Annie Liebevitz and Susan Sontag were partners for 10 years until Susan died in 2004 and Susan wrote the text that accompanied the photos in "Women." I am a huge fan of this book and have shared my love of it with many people over the years. I am envious that you will get to see the photographs in person, Mark, they're stunning in the book and I'd love to see them myself. From what I understood, the photo of Joni was taken in her own backyard. Mark, if there is a brochure/booklet of the show I'd love to have you pick one up for me and I'll happily reimburse you. No problem. Annie was interviewed for Nine News the other night and she is a woman of few words. She revealed that her own personal favourite photo is one of her mother. It is a raw, earthy photo of a woman who has seen hard times. I will try to take some pics of my own while I'm there. The MCA is in a stunning location, right on the edge of the harbour between Circular Quay and The Rocks in a historic colonial building. I guess that's irony since it houses contemporary art. I'm thinking this show is of the work from this book, if so I've seen it all. There are photos of famous women including Melissa Etheridge, Drew Barrymore, Susan Sarandon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lil Kim, Hilary Clinton and Patti Smith. There are athletes such as the Williams sisters Venus and Serena and Jackie Joyner Kersee. The photos I find most interesting are those of "everyday" women, like the one of the female coal miners coming off their shift with coal dust all over their faces. Annie truly captures the essence, the soul if you will, of every woman not just the rich and famous. The photo of the Vegas showgirl is excellent, she is in full dress but one can see the undercurrent of age creeping up on her quite clearly. I could go on and on talking about these portraits - the bald woman buried up to her neck in dirt and the thin naked woman hanging from a crucifix tied by her wrists... just so many excellent compositions. BTW, the photo of Joni spans across two pages side by side in the book, the photo Catherine found on the internet is only the left half of the whole photograph. It's the half with her in it but the rest of the fountain and her garden are on the opposite side, it's all so dark, lush and green. Do let us know all about the show, Mark. I'll have to live vicariously through you on this one. The exhibition is called, "Annie Liebovitz: A Photographer's Life 1990 - 2005". It runs for five months. I'll probably go on Sunday. One of my favourite photos is of Nicole Kidman from 2003. She emphasises her height and wraps her in a skin tight dress that makes her look like a statue. The photo is dark and moody. As I recall, Joni is leaning against a tree, perhaps in her own backyard. Annie Liebowitz has made many famous pictures but my favorite shows Linda Ronstadt in a red teddy.
