And may well be my favorite ever performance of this often done song. I sat behind her backstage and wanted to talk to her before she sang. Her look was a bit intimidating. But the sensitivity and beauty she brought to the song made her look all the more dazzling. Thanks so much for posting it. Christine is one cool kitty kat! Tonight on the bus home I finished 'A Division of the Spoils', the final novel in 'The Raj Quartet'. These are the books that the BBC mini-series 'The Jewel in the Crown' was based on. This story has a rather a horrific end followed by a short coda. Throughout the four novels, the author (whose full name happens to be Paul Mark Scott but, Amelia, I think that's another false alarm) has broken up the story, shifted back and forth in time, switching perspectives, often relating and then retelling the same events from different characters' points of view. The writer of the mini-series performed a minor miracle in so beautifully constructing a linear story for the script of TJITC. But the end comes abruptly, almost without warning. I had gotten through the horrific part on the bus ride to work this morning, knowing it was coming from seeing TJITC. But, although the coda is short, I had not gotten through it by the time I got off the bus downtown. Maybe that was part of the reason why I felt out of sorts and depressed at work this morning. Anyway, after I had gotten completely through the book just before getting off the bus to walk home tonight, I felt that need to sing something. 'Passion Play (When All the Slaves Are Free)' was what popped into my head. One of the characters in the book makes a sacrifice akin to crucifixion in the end of the story I had just finished so it was the only song I could come up with on the spur of the moment that seemed appropriate. Enter the multitudes has a significance in the story as well and I also made a mental reference to the spoiled, waited-on-hand-and-foot life that Scott describes the British raj having lived in India as I sang 'who you gonna get to do the the dirty work when all the slaves are free?' The sky overhead was fairly clear, not Exxon Blue, but nonetheless blue and the light in the west had turned the underside of the clouds and the horizon a shade that definitely resembled radiation rose. Later, when I took our dog out in the yard after arriving home, there was a crescent moon almost directly overhead, a symbol that also played a part in the end of 'A Division of the Spoils'. The book ends as one of the characters is sitting on a plane just taking off out of an airfield from an Indian town. As I looked up at the crescent moon, a jet flew directly under it, creating a line that almost seemed to underscore it. Dreams, Amelia Dreams and false alarms....
