I have checked the website and it seems genuine, there is a conference on 2 April in Austen, Texas. I felt I should share this with the JMDL in case anyone wants to delve further into this subject. I see that Joni will be featured in the upcoming Hall of Fame show, Women Who Rock http://rockhall.com/exhibits/women-who-rock/ They mention in her bio that the first song she ever composed was Day by Day. Anyone ever heard that one? I always get a chuckle when I see Joni's name assosciated with this institution - since her music is not what I'd classify as Rock & Roll (aside from a small handful of tunes, such as Raised on Robbery). I see in their current show, 500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll, they chose Help Me, her only entry on the list http://rockhall.com/exhibits/500-songs-that-shaped-rock-and/ Actually, I find questionable the whole concept of this institution - they seem to walk a fine line between legitimacy and enshrining both exceptional and low (in my view) pop culture. A museum for people who don't usually go to museums. I guess we need those too. I agree with you, that Joni isn't what I'd call a rock musician, although she definitely does rock in her own way. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: Michael quebec > To: joni@smoe.org > Sent: Sat, February 5, 2011 6:51:03 AM > Subject: Women who Rock ? > > I see that Joni will be featured in the upcoming Hall of Fame show, Women Who > Rock http://rockhall.com/exhibits/women-who-rock/ > > They mention in her bio that the first song she ever composed was Day by Day. > Anyone ever heard that one? > > I always get a chuckle when I see Joni's name assosciated with this > institution - since her music is not what I'd classify as Rock & Roll (aside > from a small handful of tunes, such as Raised on Robbery). > > I see in their current show, 500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll, they chose > Help Me, her only entry on the list > http://rockhall.com/exhibits/500-songs-that-shaped-rock-and/ > > Actually, I find questionable the whole concept of this institution - they > seem to walk a fine line between legitimacy and enshrining both exceptional > and low (in my view) pop culture. > A museum for people who don't usually go to museums. Yeah, they definitely mean Day After Day, that's actually a pretty common mistake. As for the museum, I haven't been but want to sometime. As for the "rock and roll" thing, I think they just used that particular phrase to draw a line in the sand as far as time is concerned. They really embrace pop music of all varieties, but pop music goes back a lot farther than the mid-50's age of rock and roll. Thanks for that video link Catherine, I had never heard the song. It's a very impressive first, if that is indeed the case. While I don't adore the lyrics, the chord structure is already quite inventive, imho. Wonder why she never recorded it, being an early creation and probably close to her heart on a ceratin level. If I'm not mistaken, she wrote it on the train while enroute to her first Mariposa Folk Festival. And technically, she DID record it. The audio from that video was taken from the acetate. I'm sure she thought it was one of her more amateur compositions and never released it. Should be on her boxset that we'll probably never get. Henning and Christina (Big Yellow Taxi) covered it (quite nicely I would add) on their last release: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bigyellowtaxi6 Bob NP: Iron and Wine, "Monkeys Uptown" ________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Feb 2011 10:55:25 -0600 From: est86mlm@ameritech.net Subject: Is Joni just ice? Bank Street Bridge Video Was doing alot of searching yesterday too, to understand what it was about, Randy Found this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTK7zRgt04w The video seems to be from 2008 but this is a presentation that has been done four years in a row. Looks like Jim found the portrait that is actually hanging. Searched a long time for that yesterday and couldn't come up with anything. Good find, Jim! Doug, can't wait to hear (and see) your report. Maybe you'll catch a glimpse of a black crow flying on the ice! It showed "ccaseyrn@hughes.net" as the adressee, but that was obviously a group name set up for some other names behind it. All I'm saying is: the sender did not send her email to the JMDL but to a collection of individual names that she has set up separately, even if they were collected from the JMDL. I'm sure its been discussed already here, but have any of you read Nick Hornby's book Juliet Naked? I'm reading it now, and there are some....similarities...to us freaks here! THere have been just a couple of Joni mentions so far, and I'm not done with it yet, so no spoilers! But it speaks directly to our little community here. It is really making me think about how much time we spend analyzing and surmising about our favorite artist(s). I'm drawing lots of parallels to Ryan Adams though he hasn't completely burned out yet. By the way, it was so nice to Michael Paz here a few weeks ago, even though he is a golderned wanker!!! Don't miss your chance to see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, they are really phenomenal. XOXO to all of you. Alison E. in SLC, fresh out of the hot tub. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2011 19:12:55 -0800 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Is Joni just ice?
