I'm glad the recording resonated with you as much as it did with me. It's always great when I see that someone has decided on a seldom-covered Joni song over a common one, and Hejira covers always get me excited anyway. As for Daphne, she's an actress primarily from the west coast. She's done mostly TV work and has done a lot of Doctor Who-related work in the UK. Her full bio is available on her website: http://www.daphneashbrook.com/index.html The album that Furry is on (her first) was just released last month. She also covers "Woman Of Heart And Mind" (minus the F-bomb) so she's obviously a big Joni fan. I downloaded the tracks so I'm not sure who all else plays on it. Furry's only been covered 5 times, Ian Shaw was the first to cover it in 1998 with Cedar Walton. As for the song itself, it's a wonder. Some of Joni's best images, I've not been on Beale Street but she paints the pictures so clearly I can see it all very clearly. Who is she? I love this song for the way in which it evokes the atmosphere of an age that's passing as "History falls to parking lots (sound familiar at all?) and shopping malls" with W C Handy cast in bronze and listening back to an era of "dancing it up and making deals". Furry fallen on hard times embodies the fate of the era which Joni captures so wonderfully, now he has become a sideshow, a curiosity, existing on the charity of others. He too is passing into obscurity. As always Joni nails it totally, the limo "shining on his shanty street" contrasts her situation as a musician still at the top of her game with Furry's predicament. Similar imagery to that which Joni highlighted in "For Free". It is a beautifully constructed and very moving song. Thanks for posting it Bob. This is one my favorites: Pawn shops glitter like gold tooth caps In the gray decay They chew the last few dollars off old Beale Street's carcass The hard sounds of the consonants in that first line, the alliteration of glitter/gold/gray and that internal rhyme, just a coupling of two words 'gray decay'. The image of scavenging teeth gnawing the last of the meat off a dead carcass. Brilliant stuff.
