FB is a great tool, Lieve, but that is all it is -- a tool for communication. You can use it or misuse it, but it's unlikely it can replace or crowd out the deeper and more extensive social contact you prefer. I'm a writing and reading person, so I like to rattle off a meaty letter or receive one. But a lot of my friends, family and acquaintances are not, and so FB is perfect for them because they can write just a tiny fragment of what is occurring in their lives -- and that is more than I would otherwise hear from or about them for long periods, before FB. So for that, I find FB quite wonderful. It has renewed old connections and forged some new ones. And it makes communication easy for people who are not writers or phoners or visitors. It is far better than nothing. At the same time, because all you get from FB are "sound bites" (sorta: short, pithy), it does get dull after a while and easy to take yourself away from. At least in my case, I don't have to worry about it being addictive, for that very reason. A quick scan every day or two pretty much does the trick! It's also helpful in my work (The Canadian Encyclopedia) because I'm the editor for the film and theatre sections, and a lot of actors and others in these businesses are aware of the importance of making themselves available in this way to their fans. It's free PR for them, and they use it well ... and it makes contacting them directly a lot simpler than having to track down agents, etc. Joni should have a FB page, actually ... I do wonder how much fan mail she receives these days. Or public attention, for that matter. I wonder about her health, and whether she's writing and singing. We aren't seeing new interviews in newspapers, but a FB page is often run by a celebrity's publicist and can keep the fans "in touch" ... In the summer of 2009, I was lucky enough to be in Scandinavia and the Baltic area (Sweden, Finland and Estonia), and this is how the women dressed up to celebrate those long days around midsummer.
