I finally found my way back to the list (after some moving, email changes, etc.) and decided that 2011 should have much more Joni in it! (ok so I hope that qualifies my some joni content...lol) I have to admit lurking around for a few weeks to see what was going on - good to see some familiar names and look forward to meeting everyone else! Welcome back. Bob NP: Mark Kozelek, "Finally" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2011 11:06:44 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 132 - It's 2011 and still no flying car! Greetings, salutations and Happy New Year to all my Joni friends and Joni covers fans 'round the world. We'll be kicking off the year with a fine fine collection of Joni covers, 20 tracks from all over the map, geographically and stylistically. Thanks to Chris, Paul, Joey and Pamela for their extra-special contributions. Sadly, we have to say goodbye to our friends Jade & Dexter, at least for now - the website started charging to make the videos where they had been free. While it's fun to do I don't want to sink any more funds into this thing than I already do. I'll keep my eye on it and if they change back I'll try it again. Or maybe I'll come up with another format. Your suggestions are welcome... So, here's what's on it, and where to download it: http://tinyurl.com/2d9lu3y 1. Caroline Herring - Cactus Tree: Starting off with one of Joni's early tunes, done in a very straightforward fashion close to the original - vocal and guitar. Like most of these this one comes from Caroline's 2009 album. She does struggle with Joni's helium notes but makes it work just fine. She's from Mississippi and you can hear that bit of delta influence in her sound. 2. Julia LaShae - Both Sides Now: 3. Julia LaShae - A Case Of You: Actress & Singer, both of these lovely tracks are from her 2009 release "Eadem Mutato Resurgo", which is Latin for "although changed, I shall rise again the same". Kind of a cool title. As are these tracks, well sung with style and swing, and accompanied by some fine musicians. I really dig the piano/flute interplay on BSN. Her version of ACOY is equally good, a little quieter and Krall-inspired. Julia was deeply involved with Katrina recovery work which saw her put her career on hiatus for awhile. 4. Pamela Lucarelli - Here Today And Gone Tomorrow: One of Joni's unreleased early songs, recorded by Italian JMDL'er Pamela Lucarelli with a guitar accompaniment. Always nice to hear these songs being resurrected. 5. What Time Is It Mr. Fox? - Carey: This band is a Boston-based collective, featuring a host of folks playing a variety of instruments. Nathan Cohen's violin is featured on this track as is Brian King's voice and guitar, their style is nice and loose. This live version also comes from 2009. 6. Lisa Gillam - Both Sides Now: From her self-titled 2009 album, a gentle poppish take with some sweet harmonies and nice guitar work. 7. Matthew Kern - River: This is Portland Oregon pianist Kern's 2nd foray into Joni cover territory; he recorded ACOY back in 2003. The instrumental version showcases his keyboard skills as well as the beauty of the melody. 8. Lizzy Ross - A Case Of You: Lizzy introduces this one as a song she might mess up, and she does a little at first, but once she settles in it she sounds all right. Lizzy's from Annapolis, MD but has settled in the Triangle area of North Carolina (my old stomping grounds) where she plays solo and with her band. 9. Ray Kelley Band - Big Yellow Taxi: Can't tell you a lot about these guys, the track is from 1999, definitely one of the granddads in this collection. It's an instrumental, utilizing mostly keyboards and synths. While I'm not averse to those sounds, when it's ALL you hear it's hard for it to not to sound cheesy, and that particular bullet is not avoided here. 10. Mia - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Not Mia from the JMDL but jazz singer Mia Znidaric from Poland who is married to Steve Klink who put out a Joni tribute CD a while back. Mia navigates the twists and turns pretty well here, accompanied only by jazz electric guitar and bass. 11. Eddie Low - Both Sides Now: From his 70's album "Presenting The Golden Voice of Eddie Low", so you know it's going to be a little cheesy. It doesn't disappoint in that regard; however there is a nice backstory here. From New Zealand, he was born blind and overcame that and other personal and family hardships to nurture himself musically, learning the ukelele (like Joni) as a child. He became a pretty big star in NZ and now lives in Sydney. 12. John Howard - Michael From Mountains: Not to be confused with the Australian Prime Minister, this 2009 recording starts pretty creepy but gets past that into a sort of Nilssonesque piano-pop take. 13. Lissa Hanner - River: In this 2007 recording, Lissa doesn't waste any time with Jingle Bells intros, she just jumps headfirst into the vocal. Originally from Colorado, she migrated to Nashville, hence the country music feel on the track. A little more peppy and a little less maudlin than your typical River, that's for sure. Nice slide guitar on it too. 14. Helen Abbey - Twisted: UK Jazz singer Abbey cut this almost-Joni song on HER 2009 release. She gets a bit sketchy on the higher notes but all in all quite fun. Nice playful piano behind her helps a lot. 15. Dave Brooks - Big Yellow Taxi: A solo voice and guitar, influenced by the Counting Crows cover as are so many. 16. Folklore - Both Sides Now: From 1975, an Irish 5-piece folk group. Kind of a goof on my part though, this track was already included back on Volume 42 as THE Folklore. My bad. 17. Jeannette d'Armand - Cactus Tree 18. Jeannette d'Armand - Chelsea Morning: Very cool to have a couple Cactus Trees this month, a little cactus garden for you so to speak. This one is equally lovely and adds some nice touches like strings and a different guitar arrangement. And her Chelsea Morning is terrific and not to be missed - radically different from the original in terms of instrumentation and arrangement. Jeannette has an impressive resume; her parents were both classical singers and her grandmother was a Broadway performer. She has sung for Cirque Du Soleil as well. Her voice has a nice combination of strength, warmth and richness. 19. Tamara LaPorte - The Fiddle And The Drum 20. Tamara LaPorte - A Case Of You: From Holland. Tam (as she is known) is a multi-talented artist, singer, photographer and multi-media artist. Now residing in London, she's more involved in the visual arts but recorded these two Joni tunes in a simple and stark fashion. And there we go - another new year, another set of new Joni covers. Here's hoping for many more to come. Even if NONE come out this year I will still have a new CD for you every month - whew! Just finished watching a neat movie called Crazy about the life of guitarist Hank Garland. Larry Klein (in the post Joni years) did the music and Shawn Colvin plays Kitty Wells and sings Tennessee Waltz and I Can't Stop Loving You. I had heard about him but was not all that familiar with Hank. He was an stunning guitar player and played alot of Nashville sessions back in the day with Elvis, Roy Orbison, Duane Eddy, to mention a few. He helped design the Byrdland guitar for Gibson along with his buddy Billy Byrd. He went on to record some great jazz with Chet Atkins and a very young Gary Burton on vibes. While it's not the greatest production of a movie it was a lot of fun to watch and the music was fab. Great way to start the new year in on a lazy rainy dark and dreary New Years Day in New Orleans. Hope you all are well wherever you be's. She was asked to the the original PazFest but as I recall was not available. What a master sleuth you are Muller. That's pretty cool Mikey - of course I typically assume you know and have worked with EVERYONE on these CD's so I'm not exactly surprised. Just got a nice cover of "Free Man In Paris" from your friend Susan Cowsill so they're definitely feeling the Joni down there in NOLA. Julia's Joni covers are GREAT.
