My mother's sister was a lover of the mark down, mark down, mark down and came to my mind as I read. Joni's story really got me laughing. She must have been fun at 17. What a great story teller!! I'm impressed!!! Love, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2010 10:58:44 -0500 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: Talk to me about DJRD ... Ok, so I've been obsessed with Don Juan's Reckless Daughter for the past three weeks. I've been listening to the album itself over and over and I've also been attempting to learn how to play the song DJRD, so that I can sing it and play it all the way through without bungling the lyrics. I got really close this morning before I came to work. That made me feel great!! So right now I'm listening to Paprika Plains and I thought ... if I google Paprika Plains what will come up first, and of course the Wikipedia page for DJRD came up. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Juan%27s_Reckless_Daughter] There is a lot of good info on here ... Les did you write it? ... and I love this quote from Joni which is footnoted to "Joni Mitchell biography at jonimitchell.com" (what does that mean? The Wally bio?) But here is what she says: "The Improvisational, the spontaneous aspect of this creative process - still as a poet - is to set words to the music, which is a hammer and chisel process. Sometimes it flows, but a lot of times it's blocked by concept. And if you're writing free consciousness - which I do once in a while just to remind myself that I can, you know, because I'm fitting little pieces of this puzzle together - the end result must flow as if it was spoken for the first time."[1] I love that line ... Sometimes it flows, but a lot of times it's blocked by concept ... Another question about PP. Is this the first time she plays with Wayne Shorter? Thanks for indulging me .... I love this album, and with that said, I never did own it. (gasp) ... Im not sure if I owned it on CD or not. I had a project going where I would send my daughter each and every Joni CD I had on hand, with a story about when I first heard it, what it means to me and what some of the wisdom gleaned from the JMDL had to say about it. Anyway...good luck with the conquest, Sue, I am sure you are doing great!!! From the moment Joni Mitchellbs career began with coffee-house bookings, serendipitous encounters with established stars, and a recording contract that gave her full creative control over her music, the woman from the Canadian wheat fields has eluded industry clichC)s. When her peers were focused on feminism and finding a voice, Mitchell was plumbing the depths of her own human condition. When arena rock was king, she turned to jazz. Unafraid to bwrite in her own blood,b Mitchell has been vilified as a diva and embraced as a tuneful genius, but shebs rarely been valued as an artist and a thinker. This new portrait of the reclusive icon taps into Mitchellbs evolving philosophy to examine how significant life events like failed relationships, the surrender of her infant daughter, and debilitating sickness have influenced her creative expression. Author Katherine Monk moves beyond standard biography to capture the rich legacy of her multifaceted subject, weaving in personal reflections and cultural observations as she explores everything from Mitchellbs lifelong obsession with Nietzsche to her current struggle with Morgellons syndrome to reveal the Mitchell who remains misunderstood. KATHERINE MONK is a national movie journalist for CanWest News Service. Prior to becoming a national reporter, she worked at the Vancouver Sun as a movie critic, pop music critic, and news reporter. Her book on Canadian film, Weird Sex and Snowshoes, hit the national bestseller list and was adapted to the screen by Omni Film in 2004. Monk is a regular radio and TV commentator on the subject of movies. Joni Mitchell has been part of her lifebs soundtrack for as long as she can recall. moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2010 19:47:33 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: Re: The Circle Game By the way, I forgot to mention that these two gems came to JoniMitchell.com via Michelle Mercer, who ran across them while researching her book, Will You Take Me As I Am.
