This film was made a few years ago but it has taken until now for them to release it on DVD. It is well worth the money, and I am, and have been for quite a while, a big fan of Mr Nilsson. For the Joni content, things that have already been mentioned before, but they're worth repeating: - - For the film "Midnight cowboy," both Joni and Harry wrote songs that would potentially be used for the movie. However, the producers had already been using Harry's version of the Fred Neill song "Everybody's talking" during the production/editing/whatever-you-call-it period and liked it so much, they kept it for the final product - - in the section that discusses this, they show the photo of Harry and Joni and who-is-that-guy-on-the-left winning Grammys in 1970: Joni for best folk performance for "Clouds" and Harry for best contemporary male vocal for "I guess the Lord must be in NYC." http://tinyurl.com/2fhv8cx For any Harry fans out there, there is a wonderful website full of tons of material dedicated to him and his music: http://fortheloveofharry.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 2010 09:27:40 -0400 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: Mary McCartney's new book CBS Early Show did a feature this morning on Paul McCartney's daughter and her new book of photographs. One they showed is a recent full page B&W of Joni. Of course, she is smoking a cigarette, and showing it's not-so-flattering effects. I am so envious of you for having seen Joni during this time of her career! I didn't see her until 1998 when she toured with Dylan and Morrison. The concert with Larry Klein, Greg Leiz and Bryan Blade backing her was great. But I've always wished I could have seen her in her earlier phases when she was still performing material from those albums. This was the second time I managed to see Joni (the first time was in January that same year) and I remember being as awe struck the second time as I was the first time. It is interesting to me now to realise the difficulties of performing when you are so paper thin as she was at that time. I seem also to remember someone saying on list that 'Circle Game' was written about Neil Young. I don't remember Joni struggling with her tunings at that gig. I used to love all the tuning because there'd be so many stories she'd tell and I enjoyed all the chat. It all felt very intimate. Later, with the LA Express and Refuge of the Road tours those days were gone. I can imagine it made performing much less of a strain for Joni, being surrounded by musicians and having her guitars tuned for her. I wuld never have imagined she was thinking even then of packing the music in. When she rocked out into Bonie Moronie she seemd like she was having fun - but maybe she was needing to escape from her own intensity. I can't see it was to be a crowd pleaser. If she'd have sneezed we would have applauded! Anita x On 30 October 2010 18:51, Mark wrote: > This an interesting review. It's short but telling in some ways.
