Anyway, it's Joni Covers #130, 20 tracks of delicious Joni coverss from all over the world. This time we dig into quite a few deep tracks, so expect the unexpected - though isn't that ALWAYS the case?" I must say, Bob, that your capacity for this overwhelms me. I have heard only of few of the 130 discs. (And a couple of you your Sweet 16 selections therefrom). No doubt I would love many of them (e.g., I got a real kick out of the Swedish Joni videos that were recently linked here on the list), but I just don't have the energy. Bravo ! Is there an isomorphic mapping of the covers included on the JoniMitchell.com website to those that you have included (or intend to include) on your CD's, or do some covers not make the cut? Bobsart PS - OK, let's call it a one-to-one relationship rather than an isomorphic mapping. Which phrase do you think Joni would prefer? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 2010 13:09:31 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Isomorphic Mapping? Sounds like fun! Thanks for the positive vibe, Bob. Les has enabled the Joni Undercover site to include the compilation CD they are included on, but it is only visible to me. Way back when, when the database was resident on jmdl.com as opposed to jm.com, the entries did state which volume they were included on, with a disclaimer that the compilation cd's were not for sale and were for data collection only. Les was fearful that someone would see these songs being potentially redistributed without proper compensation taking place. Therefore, that data is no longer publically available. Having said all that, almost everything makes the cut. Firstly, if it's officially released, on vinyl, cassette, or CD it gets included. Period. Unreleased audio from videos, myspace pages, audience recordings CAN be included if it meets one or more of the following criteria: 1. The performance and audio quality is very high. 2. The performer in question is significant, even though the audio quality may be lacking (Marianne Faithfull's "Amelia" and Jeff Buckley's "People's Parties" immediately spring to mind. Sometimes we get lucky and hit all cylinders; Phish recently covered "Free Man In Paris" live. I'd be interested in that even if the quality was so-so, but in this case the track sounds great and they do a solid performance of the song, so you have that to look forward to. If they don't make the cut I don't include them in the database; to do so would overly dilute the important statistics that ARE there. I'm very proud of the work I've done and also proud that the resource has been used in several books about Joni and her music. To have led the charge in this endeavor (with the help of lots and lots of great folks) and contributed to Joni's artistic legacy is really something. And to think, back in 1997, all I wanted was to talk to someone who thought (like I did and do) that Hejira was an underappreciated masterpiece.
