I do see your points and I think you are right. As to her feeling solidarity with the oppressed, there were glimpses in the 70's, when she sang about how "some get the gravy and some get the marrowbone, and some get nothing, though there's plenty to share" and her matter-of-fact-no-excuses song about drug abuse on FTR, Cold blue steel. As for the latter, I don't know, but as for hunger, I don't think she wrote from personal experience. But as I said I think you are right about how such issues got into her songs from the 80's onward. And we can listen and make them part of our own struggles, whether they are individual ones or collective ones. I guess we have to accept that Joni is writing for herself and not for mankind, that she is not a spiritual or policital leader but an artist, and a rather self-centered one. As much as I love her art, I don't really care for Joni the media person. What Joni is really like in her private life most of us don't know so I don't have any opinion regarding her private person. Thanks for your input, Michel. This was the second time I managed to see Joni (the first time was in January that same year) and I remember being as awe struck the second time as I was the first time. It is interesting to me now to realise the difficulties of performing when you are so paper thin as she was at that time. I seem also to remember someone saying on list that 'Circle Game' was written about Neil Young. I don't remember Joni struggling with her tunings at that gig. I used to love all the tuning because there'd be so many stories she'd tell and I enjoyed all the chat. It all felt very intimate. Later, with the LA Express and Refuge of the Road tours those days were gone. I can imagine it made performing much less of a strain for Joni, being surrounded by musicians and having her guitars tuned for her. I wuld never have imagined she was thinking even then of packing the music in. When she rocked out into Bonie Moronie she seemd like she was having fun - but maybe she was needing to escape from her own intensity. I can't see it was to be a crowd pleaser. If she'd have sneezed we would have applauded! Anita x On 30 October 2010 18:51, Mark wrote: > This an interesting review. It's short but telling in some ways.
