There are few real farmers anymore. A lot of it is the agri-food industry, factory farms and so on.B It's all about industry making more money and consumers getting things cheap. Never mind the fact that hybrid tomatoes might look perfect, but have no taste. We are a very wasteful lot and spoiled rotten. I could never make it as a vegan. I don't like vegetables enough, but I try, Lord knows, I try! Part of my paranoia about eating meat (apart from the growing feeling that there's something somehow "wrong" with it and yet,B I wonder,B would cows be able to make it on their own? I doubt it - imagine herds of roving feral Holsteins terrorizing villages!) stems from my job, where i hear about every recall due to listeria and e. Coli and lovely things like that. I try to refrain from eating processed food as much as possible. It's not that hard, since I don't like the taste or texture of most of it.B Of course, you can get salmonella and botulism from veggie products too.B Or you can get hit by a car, which is probably more likely.B I guess we choose a few things to get paranoid about for no rational reason. ________________________________ From: Jim To: joni@smoe.org; Catherine McKay Sent: Thu, September 30, 2010 4:53:37 PM Subject: Joni's philosophy - Worst pain in her life I like the interview a while back where she said the worst pain in her life was, "Manbs disrespect for nature." andB "Stupidity of the human animal in its relationship to the planet." B I think of it more as human laziness, greed,B and ignorance though stupidity is probably just as good of a description. B With that said, vegans can't be excluded from our planets problems.B B How many out there in Jonidom have heard of the "Dead Zone" in the Gulf of Mexico?B And this was a serious problem way before the BP spill and this year it is bigger than ever by most accounts.B And the Gulf Dead Zone's no. one cause is fromB "growing crops" in Mid America (yes vegans, it's your problem too). B I personally don't blame it on the Vegans out there but I think more of the blame should be put on the Fertilizer Chemical Companies, and ignorant,B lazy and/or greedy farmers. B For more info on the Dead Zone and theB ills of over use of fertilizer, see B http://serc.carleton.edu/microbelife/topics/deadzone/ The Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone It was a serious problem long before the BP oil spill. B http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/TOE61805G.htm Fertilizer overuse destroying Chinese soil b study B The aboveB are perfect examples of Joni'sB B "Stupidity of the human animal in its relationship to the planet." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Oct 2010 16:38:04 +0200 From: B Lux Subject: Joni and Harry Nilsson Hey folks, a few months ago I asked if any of you had ever heard of any collaborations between Joni and Harry Nilsson. No-one could confirm, but at least today I came across this image of the two of them at some award ceremony. It's from the new documentary about Harry, "Who is Harry Nilsson". I had never heard of him until recently, and funny enough they say the same about him as about Joni: either people don't know him at all, or they absolutely love him! Err... I wonder if it is at all possible to send pictures to the list... I think not, so here is a link to the trailer where I found the photo: http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2577336601/ I have had a very jmdl-related summer, meeting Joseph Palis, Ingrid Lochrenberg, Ron Greer, Dave Blackburn and Robin Adler, CHristina Friis-Nielsen and Henning Olsen.. Oh and attending a tribute concert to Joni Mitchell at the Copenhagen jazz festival was another highlight I'd like to report on here....Once I find the time! Hope all are well! But thanks for the link, I was able to see the pic you spoke of. Must have been around the time of Nilsson Schmilsson I'm guessing. You have had a wonderful Joni/JMDL summer. I'm jealous!
