But I had second thoughts once I heard the song included on Travelogue. Just as the line about the baby now jumps out as a much heavier and moving lyric than i ever realised (knowing what we now know), I think the mermaid line carries much more meaning than I previously thought - it just seems so unlikely that late Joni would happily resurrect an early song unless she was 100% at ease with it. I think the line may have wry humour or irony, or even harsher, a kind of clear-eyed no-illusions criticism of her lover: he's invested all his fantasies of freedom in sailing, and that includes the fantasy of sexual freedom, a harim of temptresses waiting for him somewhere far out at sea (maybe an implication that he 'collects' lovers, and that she's aware of only being the latest in a long line of catches). The reality behind the illusion of sexual freedom is then expressed at the very end of the song (the baby). So there's a kind of imaginative, emotional logic after all. I don't know if you'll agree, but to me the line sits well with a series of other early Joni lyrics where her angelic delivery belies very dark sentiments and kind of puts you off the scent. The song's better served (I think) by the darker Travelogue version. Best lines/rhymes? I'd put just about every line of the Hejira album, most of DJRD (the song) - especially 'Behind my bolt-locked door/ the eagle and the serpent are at war in me, / the serpent fighting for blind desire, / the eagle for clarity'..etc. And many many others... :) Greetings to all from rain-sodden Edinburgh (which will also be hosting the Great Canadian Song-book some time soon). Thanks Richard!! I have this show, I'll have to dig it out and listen to it. This set list shows that she played the first six songs in DADF#AD. IMHO, she either played IHAK in DADF#AD, or gabbed while she dropped the F# down to E, and then gabbed again to bring it back up to F# for Cactus Tree (where I think she says she wrote the song A LA Dylan). The next two songs (LG and M) were played in Open G (DGDGBD) and then maybe LB and BV were also played in open G. Songs #11, 12 and 13 are FFCGAC or CFCGAC and, in my opinion again, Both Sides Now could have been played in either Open D or Open G. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I think she may have used Open D and Open G interchangeably for some "easier' songs depending on which tuning she was in.
