The one that started it all off for me (in about 1995) was this: "just how close to the bone and the skin and the eyes and the lips you can get, and still feel so alone" From the first song on the first Joni album I ever bought, Hejira. Pretty sure it needs no explanation... - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2010 09:33:28 -0400 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: RE: For those who own the Joni Mitchell Complete sheet music book ... Hi Mia, Well, the Complete book agrees with you, although they say the tuning is EBEEBE Capo 5. My other criteria for determining (in my own mind) what tuning Joni used is where she places the song in early gigs because ease of retuning is always an issue. I've always played it according to Jared White's transcription at the site, which works, but also makes the song easy to place in an open D set. Although you could also say that it would work in your tuning to move quickly to the Dawntreader tuning (DGDDAD). This is the point where I'd like to pick up the phone and say, "Hey, Joan, can you give us the goods?" :) Does anyone have access to old Joni sets that include IHAK to see which songs she played in the same set? Thanks!!! And thanks again Mia for your great contributions to the transcription database!! Hi Sue, I haven't seen the songbook yet, but I'm curious - what is the weird E tuning? A while back, I loaded my own transcription to the site for I Had a King. I used the double dad tuning: DADDAD (but capo'd up). This seems to work better for me than the DADEAD tuning - the shapes are easier to play, and it's easy to just glide your thumb over the strings. But I can't see playing the Midway in any other tuning. Thanks, Mia ********************************************** I've been trying to work through this book (which was leant to me by dear friend Walt Breen). I'm up to Blue and have only found two song tunings I grossly disagree with ... I Had A King and That Song About the Midway ... which coincidentally are in the same tuning DADEAD ... the author has them in a weird E tuning ... anyone else have issues with this? That's a good idea...it wasn't one she played a lot that I recall, but I'll check when I get home and see what I have. Bob, laughing because he knows exactly what IHAK means. Nothing to add, but when I was playing her music I always found DADF#AD to work well. I believe that is D module? Marin area folks might want to check it out. It says a panel in the exhibit will be dedicated to B&R, highlighting the legendary, star-studded benefit concerts of the '70's, of which Joni appeared in '78 & '79. The pic, credited to Richard McCaffree, is better than this one, on the B&R website: http://www.breadandroses.org/images/stories/gallery/joni_herbie.jpg The pic in the newsletter says it's from 1978, but I think that may be a mistake. The one in this link is, for sure, the military uniform proves that. I think the one in the newsletter may be from 1979. The Joni audio from these shows has never surfaced, although other audio by the other performers has. It's presumed that B&R has it languishing somewhere, and I would guess Joni has it, too.
