But when I get enthused, I don't care and just let it flow. I actually was a Journalism minor in college for a minute. However, the fine artsy side took over and I spent too much time listening to Joni albums and other artists in my dorm room (not to mention partying) to be disciplined enough to carry it off back then! Couple of more thank yous to Anita from the U.K. for her collective gifts to us via Lieve. She picked out beautiful little art prints for all of us. Also, as usual, I collected my commemorative, souvenir "bug bites" once again and it was great to have in-the-house Dr. Laura to treat me with perfect home remediies in Suite 629 until I got back to L.A. Thank you again for that! I am amazed Bob and others also had the guy in the blue Smurf shirt sighting. I also saw that guy walk by outside the hotel one morning and thought it was a clear sign that he was there with us in spirit. Wow. Hope everyone is recovering well ;-) Love, Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2010 22:57:38 +1000 (ChST) From: "Pat Boland" Subject: ...mix of names and places at a Detroit music forum: Came across this mix of names and places at a Detroit music forum: "The Retort, the Living End... and most specifically, the "white" blues and folk club The Chessmate. Also the Raven Gallery?...not the one that used to be in Southfield, but the original in Birmingham? I remember seeing a young Ron Coden and Josh White jr.. The reference to Ron Coden made me think of PhiL Marcus Esser (sp?) and Paul Bowles." ...All my old home grounds and friends... even Morrie from the Chessmate. ...played open-mic there occasionally. Saw Pat Sky play there... Bill & Mary Rutledge too. The Raven, Ron, Josh... awesome!!! The old Raven was by far the best venue although the folk circuit was alive and well in Detroit and places like the Chessmate and the Living End were great too. Ron and Josh were regulars at the Raven and I think, for a time Ron was the 'house performer' at the Raven and he always packed the place. I held a similar role at a small place called the Cellar further up the thumb in Port Huron. I also booked the performers which included Ron, Josh, PhiL Marcus Esser, Charlie Latimer as well as Chuck and Joni Mitchell. Those were the days! I enjoyed the effort made to connect the songs to each other. Funny thing though....very few of us will list Blue as our favorite Joni and yet it's always the one referred to as her masterpiece. This is the original quote, apparently they rewrote it for the ad without the author's permission: "As a child, I had never heard anything like (nor did I quite know what to do with) Joni Mitchell's wild contra-alto vibrato. I like to think Joni would've preferred it that way; I had to work for it. And now I can't imagine life without such a remarkable soundtrack. I can't imagine falling in love without "A Case of You" on repeat, or staring out a window thinking back on my life without the distant sound of "Both Sides Now" playing low & wild in the next room." Jordan Brooke H. Fan, Nashville, TN When I think of wild vibrato, I'm thinking of the other Joan, or Buffy Ste Marie. Anyway...remember when they asked for fan quotes for possible liner notes? I thought this might be from that, but it isn't. I found her blog entry http://jordanbrooke.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html where she says a certain "Phil" got the quote from her while at the airport. B&N has several of Joni's titles on sale for $5.99 (online) including Hejira, LOTC and C&S, but they don't say whether they are remastered versions. Also, jmdler David Lahm's two "Jazz Takes on Joni" CDs are $7.59, and free shipping over $25 so if you need to fill in your Joni library.... As someone who has presented stuff, I am always aware that there's someone out there who will know if the facts aren't right and you are the guy who knows the stats about covers. However, it is always good to read someone's view of a Joni album and this is a thoughtful piece. As to why 'Blue' is always referred to as Joni's masterpiece, I reckon it's because, as Joni put it I seem to recall, that she was 'paper thin'. With the exception of Carey, 'Blue' is clealry an album of someone who, at that time in their life, felt 'paper thin'. Everyone feels like that at some time or another and in that way it is very accessible. It is actually blue and everyone knows how that feels. The long time JMDL vote as Joni's masterpiece seems to go with 'Hejira', which, to me, is an album that seems more philosophical. It is a journey and seems to me to be more explorative and less cathartic than 'Blue.' But then I think just about every Joni album is a master piece. I still can't quite find anyone else in the same league of masterpieces, though I still keep looking! Anita x On 9 September 2010 19:15, wrote: > Thanks Richard - a well-informed read. Several years ago, a buddy of mine named Marty worked on a local cable access show (sort of a Wayne's World kind of thing) called Quintessential Covina. They basically played music videos and goofed around for the 30 minutes they were on the air. I don't know if it played on all LA cable networks, or just in Covina, but I'm sure their viewership was rather limited. This was around the time that Joni created three music videos using her own money, and some how they got their hands on at least of these. Marty and his wife were always big Joni fans, and she suggested they contact Joni's management company to see if she would be willing to come on the show and do an interview and talk about her new videos. To everyone's shock and amazement, she agreed to do it. At the time, my friend sent me a VHS tape with the show on it. He had also been promising me for a very long time to make me a copy of the Refuge of Roads concert film (which at the time was only available on laser disc) and he graciously included this as well. He even surprised me by having Joni create a personal message to me about the long awaited concert film. Unfortunately, over the years, I lost track of the QC interview, so I have been bugging him for another copy. After waiting for a very long time, much to my delight, I finally received a copy on DVD yesterday. This isn't the actual footage that was aired on QC, but the entire raw interview footage. Marty hopes to remix and send me another DVD in the future of just the edited footage, but in the mean time I am thrilled to death to get my hands on this again. I haven't had the chance to watch it yet (I think Marty said there is close to two hours of raw footage), but will definitely do so over the weekend. There might be copyright issues, but I've asked Marty if I can make copies for anyone on this list (at a minimum, I promised Bob a copy at Jonifest years ago). At a minimum, I'm hoping I can transcribe the whole thing and have it added to JM.com. Anyway, I was just so excited to get this, I had to share my good fortune with everyone on the list. Hopefully I will be able to share this with everyone in the very near future. Jack ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 01:56:26 EDT From: Merk54@aol.com Subject: Re: Rarest Joni Mitchell Interview Ever??? Well I just finished watching the Joni interview and it was even better than I remembered. I think I like the unedited version better than the one that aired on the show. First of all, on the raw footage, the camera never leaves Joni, plus they don't edit any of the parts where Joni goes off on a tangent or stops to think about something. It felt much more like a conversation than an interview. There is also this whole section after the interview where she pulls out some samples of her artwork (prints and some art book I've never seen before - maybe the catalogue from her art show in Japan). She then talks about several of the pieces, and what inspired her to paint them. It is very cool. All in all there is about an hours worth of pure unadulterated Joni taken from right after Chalkmark came out. She's in a great and relaxed mood through out the whole thing and she looks fantastic. I've suggested to my friend to contact JM.com about putting this in the video section. Again, I'm not sure from a copyright perspective if this is possible or not. I hope so, cause I think people would really enjoy this. And to know that it all took place on some small all volunteer local cable access show makes it all the more charming to me. I will try to type up a transcript, but due to the length that will certainly take me a while. Anyway, thanks for letting me share my excitement about having this back in my possession.
