They evoke so much I can almost smell the jambalya and the music. It all sounds so diverse and interesting. As I read the accounts for Paz Fest2, I remembered the accounts of all the other JMDL Joni Fests I have read about over the years. Thoughts of the Full Moon, Holycombe, Idyllwild, Southern France and now New Orleans. I am struck by how different they all feel, yet the fine, good spirit of much Love and Joy seem to emanate throughout. It's something they all seem to share. It reminds me of all the wonderful feelings I have experienced when I have been graced to make it to a Joni Fest. I look forward to reading more when others get home and find time to write. With lots of love Anita. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Sep 2010 13:33:29 +0000 (GMT) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: more Pazfest details Bob wrote: "And that's pretty much the blow-by-blow of Pazfest II for me. Sorry to blabber on and on, but Lieve asked me to write in great detail, and I've learned that life is just a lot easier if you do waht Lieve says to do." Hahahahahaha! Well Bob, I have never seen better proof of that fact! You wrote a wonderful review, so all JMDLers will now be convinced that it's well worth taking Lieve's advice. I will humbly move on. Laura's review was also nicely detailed and very enjoyable. But let me quickly add 2 more thank-yous myself. Firstly to Cassy for the beautifully designed laminated "entry passes" that she made, which will serve as great mementos. Thank you Cassy, for the kind thought and careful work this required. And then to another lady who wasn't there but who asked me to arrange a little present for all festers: our dear friend Anita. She had first thought of flowers, but as we were not all permanently based together in the same place like we were at the Full Moon or at Holycombe or Idyllwild, I decided on a small memento for everyone to take home: a postcard size "art card" with a little detail photo of New Orleans. Anita, I know your kind gesture was much appreciated! (I also delivered the other half of your request: to kiss Paz and Bob for you. You see, I can be trusted with the toughest of tasks!) Looking forward to more Pazfest reports to come! I am finally surfacing and feeling somewhat normal. I am holding off on my report as I have to focus on getting back to work this week as I am WAY behind in what I SHOULD be doing. Suffice it to say that I had an amazing time and am inspired to try maybe one more on a grander scale. I had alot of local response this time from artists that did not get to do it that wanted to and the ones that did are ready to go again. We will see what the future brings. Thanks so much to everyone who helped out with the planning and execution of this fest. Special thanks to Jody and Scott, and the kitchen staff Bob and Phyliss, Jerry and Jim Traweek (also self appointed PazFest savior with transportation and support of all kinds) Cassy and Sue Tierney Mac for the help on the Saturday night party. To everyone who came to both PazFest's, the children of Honduras are so much better off because of you and my sister and family are all deeply thankful for your participation. The musicians hold a special place in my heart because THAT is what this whole thing is about, healing ourselves and others thru music. For all those who were not able to be here with us you can send donations to the Ruth Paz Burn and Pediatric Surgery Hospital to The Ruth Paz Foundation 17 Waverly Place Destrehan, La. 70047 For all donations over $25 you will receive a PazFest II T-Shirt designed my Freda with Creative inspiration by Jim Traweek and original illustration by Gordon Bruce. This will help us get over the hump of the goal that we had set. I will be putting the T-Shirt design up on the website in the next few days so you can see how beautiful it is. Once again, thanks to Joni for the music and special thanks to our friend Les Irvin for this amazing community. However, I must pledge to be at Paz Fest 3, (whenever it happens and if I'm still on this earth) and deliver the Frenchies myself. I am saving the cash as we speak. In all the music and reverie I didn't want that moment to be left out, it was very kind of you, Anita. Lieve did an awesome job selecting the New Orleans art postcards for everyone, mine will be framed and hung with the love it came with. Thanks so much Anita, we all thought of you while we selected the special card we took home. Since I'm already jonesing for more Joni covers... Well, looks like summer is drawing to a close and we begin the final third of the year, reason enough to break into a new set of Joni covers and celebrate! And here they are, from all over the world and in multiple genres. So while I'm in New Orleans listening to live Joni covers, you can sit back and enjoy these. Download the lot of them here: http://tinyurl.com/2847p5r And here's what you get.... 1. Therese Lech - Both Sides Now: OK, mere words can't describe how I feel about this recording. It is simply amazing and moves me to tears with its emotion and beauty and simplicity. The acoustic bass instrumentation is the simplest of frameworks, and Therese fleshes it out vocally with a soulful, jazzy vocal. Listen for yourself....wow. Hard to believe that this song, one that I've heard done HUNDREDS of times, still has the power to move me this way, but that's the magic of Joni's talent, right? 2. Sophie Milman - Be Cool: Let me just say this right off...Sophie is REAL easy on the eyes. But even if I didn't know that, I'd still enjoy this fire and ice cover of Joni's cool WTRF jazz standard. Sophie has been praised as one the rising stars of the Canadian Jazz scene. This track will show you why this is the case, great vocals and some superb playing too. 3. Fernanda Cunha - Dreamland: Fernanda contacted me through the website and kindly sent me a copy of her CD. Her take on Dreamland is original and fresh-sounding. She is Brazilian and the CD is a fusion of Canadian and Brazilian writers (she also covers a Bruce Cockburn song) and Brazilian musicians. It's a challenge to listen to it and not move your feet! 4. Simona D'Agostina - For Free: 5. Simona D'Agostina - Blue 6. Simona D'Agostina - Hejira: Simona's vocals are very pure-sounding, and even though she's singing out of her native tongue she rarely fumbles over a word. She closely follows Joni's original templates for the most part, both in terms of instruments (piano on the first 2 and guitar on the 3rd) and singing. For Free adds some nice harmony vocals to boot. 7. Stephanie Lemoine - Black Crow: Singing in a heavy accent, Stephanie delivers Black Crow with a solid jazz-rock feel, being driven by a solid rhythm section. 8. Barbara Wiernik - My Old Man: Like Therese Lech's recording, this is a vocal-bass duo with an original arrangement and as such it has a real sparse feel to it. Very unique and very nice. 9. Music-Themes - A Case Of You: This one comes from a 2009 album titled "Inspirational Guitar Music". Not sure who is singing but he sounds at times like Neil Diamond, both in his clear baritone and in his style. All in all, a very enjoyable track. 10. Cat Beach - Big Yellow Taxi: From her 2009 release, Cat's BYT is very full-sounding and fun with a hint of a country sound to it. 11. Nadja Stoller Trio - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Dating back to 2002, this one is the oldest cut on this collection, which is to say that this is all new stuff. It's also the longest track on this one at 6.5 minutes. Nadja's trio is classic cocktail smoky nightclub jazz, some nice easy piano and bass and her singing is just as good. This one goes down really easy. 12. Anne Harping - Both Sides Now: So what are the odds that someone with the name of Harping would play the harp? Then again, maybe with that name it was her destiny. Either way, here is a gentle solo harp instrumental of BSN for your pleasure. 13. Janet MacEwen - Blue: Canadian Janet MacEwen has been involved with music and theater her whole life and her resume is very extensive. Her cover of "Blue" is unique in that it is essentially acapella, save for some extraneous sounds of the sea in the background, as if she were singing it while floating on a raft out in the sea (maybe wanting someone to crown and anchor her). Her voice is really nice and she handles the melodic changes with ease. 14. Frankhouse - All I Want: This is a very fine jazz-oriented instrumental of the Blue classic, featuring some nice brass work and electric guitar. I hope Joni realizes that her music is mostly being appropriated in a jazz format and that she is fully appreciated in that way. 15. Lau B - Songs To Aging Children Come: Pretty much a carbon copy of Joni's original, but I give Lau B points for doing a seldom-covered deep track. 16. Nicole Belanus - A Case Of You: A nice folkish-sounding take from a 2008 sampler on the Renewal label. Nicole's voice is solid yet also has the right amount of honesty and vulnerability to make this recording a nice one. 17. Shawn Wilhite - The Circle Game: Like #13, this one starts out with seagulls and sea sounds, but quickly transitions into guitar and percussion and some really nice harmonies, and even a guitar solo break. While I can sometimes get bored by TCG covers, this one has a spritely pace and playfulness that keeps me listening. 18 Shirley Ritenhour - Both Sides Now: Hailing from New York, Shirley reinvented her musical career as a cabaret singer when she lost her job in 2009. She sings BSN in much the cabaret style, with plenty of drama and style. She even titled her 2009 CD after Joni's song as a tribute to her love of pop and classical music. And that brings us to the end of another collection of Joni covers as we forge ahead through the decade. Hope you liked it, hope you liked some of it, would love to hear what your favorites are. I'll be back in a month with another new edition and will have another catch-up retro revisit in a couple of weeks. Thanks for taking the time to listen or at least to read all the way to here. She may have "seen it all" but she hasn't seen this one, truly. I was absolutely thrilled that our Bryan Thomas could be there once again and he blew us away as usual. On the way to swamp lunch and dropping people at the airport, Michael said we needed to stop for a cocktail. He drove us up to the Garden District and dropped us at this amazing place out of a Southern antelbellum novel called the Columns Hotel where we had a few Bloody Mary's. It was just gorgeous and out of a dream. The other destinations were equally fantastic and I especially enjoyed the Colombian cuisine at Baru. While there, Sue and I got to talking and she has a fantastic idea for the next Fest. OMG. On a Caribberan island where she has musical connections. Let me just falll over now. Thanks for not getting annoyed for me coming in every night in the wee hours from either Suite 629 or our infamous balcony ;-) Thanks all who were there and made this so wonderful. I need to curb my medication and maybe get a producer to be my bitch and DO ALL the details so I can enjoy meself to the fullest. MAYBE next year. (Excuse me ASHARA are you available?? We missed you babee!) I want to compile a bunch of quotes from the reviews of PazFest for my publicist. Would you please keep track of the quotes from the listers with apropos names and titles etc so I can turn them over for a post press release AND pre release for PazFest III which will be the CD release party for the CD?? Deadline for submissions will be a week from Friday when I get back home and can turn them over to Laura. It looks like we will break tradition and have the CD release at another venue that has more SEATING!!!!! Unless of course Howie steps up to the plate and provides better services for my peeps.
