The FLAC files are compressed files and will be reduced in size compared to equivalent WAV files found on a normal CD. Thus, they can be downloaded more quickly. When decompressed from FLAC back to WAV format, they should be of the same quality and sound like the original CD i.e. the compression / decompression is "lossless" Joe np Grievous Angel - Gram Parsons On 5 September 2010 08:00, JMDL Digest wrote: > > JMDL Digest Sunday, September 5 2010 Volume 2010 : Number 264 > > > > ========== > > TOPICS and authors in this Digest: > -------- > FLAC anyone? Having attended 3 Full Moon Jonifests, and a fest each in France, England and California, plus several minifests in the UK, I must say that this gathering in New Orleans is totally different and totally wonderful yet again, in its own unique way. New Orleans is such a beautiful place, and we are staying in a great hotel right in the oh-so photogenic French Quarter, so that in itself is a fantastic treat. But of course, as always, these fests are foremost about the people and the music. First of all the people: it is so good to see old friends again. There were many that I knew from my very first Jonifest 8 years ago, like Jodi (and her guy Scott), Kate and Jeff, Bob, Jerry, Jimmy and Ed, Pearl and Steve - and of course Paz, but more about him later. Other people I knew from later fests or even just from their posts on the JMDL, but they already felt like old friends, like Cassy, Kakki, Sherelle, Sue, Laura, David, Lesley and Steve, Phyllis and Bob, and possibly a few others whose names escape me now, for which my apologies. Sad also to know that some others could not make it through circumstances, but still, they were remembered and with us in spirit. And then it's always heartening to see new generations turn up, such as Laura's son Peter, and Bob Muller's son Nate - talk about peas in a pod! But as this was really a Pazfest as well as a Jonifest, I should not postpone any longer to mention Mr Michael Paz. Wow, has he delivered! He had it all organised to perfection: the accommodation, the transport, the gigs, and not in the least the parties, and anything else in between that needed to be improvised, it all worked out so well. Michael is like a mighty whirlwind who knows how to get things done without ever looking like he's too stressed (in fact he is in the swimming pool while I write!), but there is no avoiding the fact that this must have taken him countless hours and days to get it all together. I should also mention, and definitely not in the least, Paz's lovely wife Freda and their 2 great sons Mikey and Julian, who helped to make us feel so welcome by opening up their house, driving us around and making some great music. But before I get onto the music, I really must mention "gentaman" Jim, who appeared a few weeks ago out of nowhere, and took on so much of the logistics work that you might have thought he was specially hired by Paz. So now the music. Many of you know I am not a good gig reviewer. I hear it, I enjoy it, but I can't describe it properly. So I feel tempted to just go "WOW" and leave it at that, but I feel that would be cheating. Well the gig on Friday evening at the Howling Wolf was just flipping amazing. Apart fom a few of our own performers such as Sue Tierney, Cassy and Kate Bennett, Paz had come up with a list as long as your arm of seriously professional performers in such a variety of styles that it was sometimes impossible to believe they were all performing Joni Mitchell numbers. OK, a few of the jazz people brought jazz numbers (such as You've Changed or Nothing Can Be Done - or is that Comes Love?) that were not written by Joni but covered by her, but I think that formula worked very well, and the standard of music was just astounding. Let me just mention 2 acts, both including 2 sets of young brothers. First there was Paz with his 2 sons, doing a truly amazing and enjoyable combination of live music and DJ mix-and-scratch of Joni numbers. Generally speaking, I may be the wrong generation for that sort of music, but I was totally enjoying it on all levels. Paz, I know you are proud of your boys, and very rightly so. What a treat it was for all of us! Then there was the last act, a band from Alabama called Roman Street, consisting of 2 brothers (aged 22 and 24) who play acoustic guitar and bass, plus a rhythm guy. They did their own acoustic version of Talk To Me and Urge For Going, and I thought I was going to fall off my chair! I hope others will send much more detailed reviews of these and the other acts, because most of them were absolutely spine chilling. I guess Friday evening was the musical highlight, but the preview session at the Ogden museum on Thursday was also very enjoyable, especially as we could see Paz being interviewed - and being very eloquent at it - for a radio programme. Then yesterday, Saturday, we had a fantastic afternoon and evening at Paz and Freda's house, where we had beautiful food prepared by Paz and Freda with serious assistance from gentaman Jim, Jodi, Cassy and possibly others to whom I am truly indebted. And again, of course, the musical instruments came out and people started singing and playing. I just sat back in a comfy chair and drank it all up, reflecting how healthy this is for the soul, like food and drink for the body, and how lucky we are to be able to take it all in. A friend of Paz and Freda, called Kurt, played a number of Beatles songs which of course we all sang along with. I know people sometimes say that Beatles music is dated now, but when you suddenly hear someone play Sexy Sadie live again, you really realise with a jolt how good these numbers were, and still are. And just a last thing about New Orleans and music: it really is true what they say about music just coming out of all the houses here. There is so much talent here, as we saw at Paz's house yesterday. A few more friends of Paz popped round, joined in with the playing, and when I chatted with him he told me he plays in a cajun band. He explained in great detail the difference between cajun and zydeco, the history of it all, etc. And as a result, we are now going to see him play at a local restaurant. In fact, Kakki has just tapped on the door of the Crowne Plaza Business Center, which means I have to stop writing and send this off, so this is the end, folks! The music is waiting!
