Affectations as opposed to style. It's very hard to be true to yourself. For instance, I don't care too much for the second album I made [Clouds]. I like the first one, the first one's honest. Blue is an honest album. Clouds has some honest moments on it, but at the time, I was singing a lot with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and they had a style, out of necessity, to blend with one another. They had a way of affecting vowel sounds so that when they sang together, they would sing like a unit. I picked up on that and there's a lot of that on the album. I find it now kind of irritating to listen to, in the same way that I find a lot of black affectations irritating. White singers sounding like they come from deep Georgia, you know? It always seems ridiculous to me. It always seemed to me that great singer - now we're talking about excellence, not popularity - but a great singer would sing closer to his or her own speaking voice." > Anyone else hear any of the CSN&Y 'affected' vowel sounds? It's probably because I'm English but I don't hear this on any of the songs on Clouds. Could be out front, could be in the pool area. Reminds me of the scene in Midnight Cowboy where Rico dreams about being at the fancy Florida hotel. You can select 720p for HD, 1080p also but a bit too much data for standard DSL lines. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3u2WZl76Zo Hope you dig... dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 18:17:00 -0700 (PDT) From: M C Subject: Re: Still reading after all these years I've been lurking on the list for about ten years now, and I still very much enjoy reading the digests. I contribute rarely, I get very little if no response, no matter. I do better contacting people off list. I've e-met some really wonderful people that way. I use only phone, email, snail mail, and face to face. As for Joni, sounds like she's preparing to become her own kind of Hana, doing what must be done to help other sufferers of Morgellon's. Some say it's in service...among the wide wide world of noble causes, she found this one. mc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 01:41:01 +0000 From: Sherelle Smith Subject: Looking forward to seeing everyone in New Orleans Hi my dear Joni friends! First of all, I deeply apologize for my abscence from the list for what seems like forever. I work a lot of hours now among other disruptions. One of the happiest disruptions I've had is the birth of my grandson Michael Saidi Thomas. Words cannot describe the joy I feel every time I see him. Patti sings "Michael from Mountains" in text to my Facebook page. Looking so forward to seeing everyone who is heading down to New Orleans this week. Unfortunately, I can't get there until Friday evening due to obligations at work. I also have to get going first thing Sunday morning to get back to further obligations at work. It's not so bad...I like what I do. I am so excited to be celebrating Joni with you. I keep trying to put into words how much she and her music means to me but it's not possible. She holds a place in my heart as an artist that no other artist can get to. Sheer genius! Paz, I look forward to coming to seeing New Orleans for the first time in person! My camera is ready!
