The first was, as I4ve said to myself and others for years: don4t mistake absence of reply for absence of interest! I often read something on this list with great interest, even follow up on it by looking up more information on the subject, but I don4t always send a reaction, for a multitude of reasons: lack of time, lack of anything new to say, etc. So looking at it that way, I would say: nothing to worry about! But my second reaction is more new and worrying. As Dave, Bob and Mark have already said, there is now the influence of Facebook. I don4t want to start on a tirade here against Facebook (although I often don4t need much to get going!), I do know it has advantages too, but let4s just say that FB is not for everybody, and that it has a different nature from this list. So I can only say: l hope with all my heart that this list will survive Facebook. At its best, this list was home to the most amazing group of witty and intelligent people, who managed to create a fantastic forum for conversations ranging from Joni to politics to the use of lint. I learned so much, I laughed, I cared. Yes at times things went wrong, people went on and on about politics and took it too personal, some people went too personal in other ways and mistook the list for their private therapy session, but we got over that with the amazing spirit of tolerance and acceptance that governed the list. Personally I don4t think we can keep the list going with just discussions about the meaning of Joni4s lyrics and the like, even though those discussions were the cement that kept this JONI list a Joni list. Maybe all things are due to pass, and maybe this list has passed its peak. Some of the best contributors are gone, such as Bob Murphy, whose memorial page I am still sadly waiting for. But I have not given up. We still have great new people popping up, and as long as Facebook does not devour them all, we may yet survive and see another great flowering of writing and friendship on this list, much more profound and quirky than you can ever have on Facebook. My best to all, Lieve - ----- Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 07:06:20 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Re: SJC uhm it was John Mitchell I read this list still, Bene, though I skim the njc and hope for a return to discussions about the words and music which have been so enlightening in the past. I'm not as interested in Joni the person, her relationships or her crabby outbursts about others. I think Facebook maybe has taken its toll on readership since one only has so much time per day to devote to browsing websites. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2010 18:52:11 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: SJC uhm it was John Mitchell Hi Bene. I'm on the only-Joni list so, I only get the JC stuff. I can't speak for anyone else but, I am going through a major upheaval at the moment and I'm only just managing to read the list but can't really get into anything until my life settles down a bit. I'm staying with a friend until I get a job and a place of my own. I have heard of the vampire series but hadn't paid attention to the characters. Nice to read your posts again, Bene. Just to let you know there are many of us here reading the list regularly but rarely coming out of lurkdom. Also the list tends to follow trends. If Joni's active We become more active. During her fallow periods the list tends to be a place where the community shares more about themselves, focusing on meets, fests and general life. Everyday I listen to or play Joni and everyday I check my email. sometimes there is time to ponder and respond ( like today) and at other times a skimming action seems to suffice. Is everyone busy at Pazfest... or did facebook take eveyone's attention? Anyhow, the post was about a British vampire series called Being Human. I thought, wrongly, that one of the main characters was called Joni Mitchell - but then ex-jmdler Joseph took a (second) look at the same thing yesterday and said no Bene it's JOHN Mitchell. Sorry! But it got me thinking of some story I heard about a guy, musician or character of a film, who was actually named after Joni. Does that ring any bells with anyone? And who actually reads the list these days...? If Joni was ever to post, she would be talking about what the world has become. I too don't contribute very much on the list these days, but read almost every post. It's been 12 yrs since I've been on the list, and I still enjoy reading the Joni post, and the NJC posts. I'm wrapped up into Pazfest right now, and can't wait to hear the excellent musicians that will tribute Joni. As for Facebook, I do enjoy it. I get to see photos and posts, not just from family and old high school friends, but from my Joni friends. Where else can you see Kilauren's arm with a tatoo of "Little Green" if it weren't for FB. Wish you were going to N.O. too Randy!
