Is everyone busy at Pazfest... or did facebook take eveyone's attention? Anyhow, the post was about a British vampire series called Being Human. I thought, wrongly, that one of the main characters was called Joni Mitchell - but then ex-jmdler Joseph took a (second) look at the same thing yesterday and said no Bene it's JOHN Mitchell. Sorry! But it got me thinking of some story I heard about a guy, musician or character of a film, who was actually named after Joni. Does that ring any bells with anyone? I wasn't sure about the whole 'Joni as Vampire' thing so thanks for clearing that up. As for the list, it has been really quiet for awhile. Not a lot of JC these days, and most folks use other forums for their NJC. Add to that the fact that most folks in my age demographic are still clutching on to their golden oldies and not venturing out for new sounds and things can get a bit stale. Nothing like a Jonifest to get things going go - we'll see. Best Bene ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 08:16:40 -0400 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: Say It Ain't So - VLJC New York Post Updated: Fri., Aug. 27, 2010, 4:26 AM home Stars go off their rockers By MICHAEL RIEDEL Last Updated: 4:26 AM, August 27, 2010 Posted: 12:42 AM, August 27, 2010 Scenes from a show queen's nightmare: * Tommy Tune, in tight, ripped jeans, playing an aging bad- boy rocker and singing the Sid Vicious version of "My Way," complete with a low-class British accent ("I did wha' I 'ad to do"). * Pat Suzuki, the original Mei Li in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Flower Drum Song," dressed like an LA hippie and rapping Diddy songs. * Marnie Nixon, who famously dubbed Natalie Wood's singing voice in "West Side Story," and Dick Latessa ("Hairspray") scatting Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." * Barbara Barrie, Barney Miller's wife on the '70s sitcom, as a lonely spinster singing Radiohead's "Creep." * And, scariest of all, Dick Cavett, as a cross-dresser from San Francisco, moonwalking and doing rope tricks. Yikes! Wake me up! But it's no dream. All of the above happened the other week in a workshop for one of the most bizarre ideas for a Broadway musical I've ever come across. The show is called "The Last Dance," and it features a cast of Broadway old-timers performing the songs of the Police, Guns N' Roses, R.E.M., Iggy Pop, Joni Mitchell, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and others. Conceived by choreographer Jonathan Butterall ("Lestat") and produced by David Binder ("Raisin in the Sun"), "The Last Dance" seems to be inspired by the Young at Heart chorus, the rock-singing seniors who were the subject of the 2008 documentary "Young@Heart." Insiders who attended the workshop, as well as some of the vets who appeared in it, are still scratching their heads trying to figure out what the hell happened. Overheard: "Times like this you wish Michael Riedel were around." I wasn't, but here's the buzz from the grapevine. "It's been a while since I've seen one this weird," says a producer. "When Dick Cavett came out at the end and did a rope trick that he said he won an award for in Nebraska when he was 16, what are you supposed to think?" "I guess you could call it 'experimental geriatric theater,' " says another person. "Some of them looked like they were having fun, but some of them looked like they had no idea what they were doing." Says a third: "The music director had to spoon-feed the notes to a couple of them because they couldn't get the rhythm." And, from a cast member: "I worked on it for a couple of weeks and, frankly, I have no idea what we were doing." The setting of "The Last Dance" was a luggage carousel in what appeared to be some sort of futuristic airport. The idea is that the old people are waiting to collect their bags before heading into the afterlife. They sing songs that supposedly have something to do with their reaction to dying. While "The Last Dance" was certainly odd, it wasn't terrible, some people say. "It was kind of touching," says a potential investor. "It was like you were hearing these pop songs for the first time." The standout, by all accounts, was Barrie's rendition of "Creep." Says a source: "She was amazing. She was alone onstage, and she sang the hell out of the song." Barrie, who won a Tony in 1971 for "Company," later admitted she'd never heard of "Creep" or Radiohead. But she sort of liked the lyrics: You float like a feather In a beautiful world. I wish I was special. You're so f - - king special. The ending was obvious and hokey, with everybody coming together to sing "The Last Dance." "It was like Disco Night at the Actors' Home," says a spy. We probably won't see "The Last Dance" on Broadway anytime soon -- although if Binder and Butterall can line up a couple of big names, maybe, just maybe, we'll get lucky and they can slip it in before the Tony cutoff in April. I hear Elaine Stritch does a fabulous "Fly, Robin, Fly," Barbara Cook is a big Barry White fan, and Angela Lansbury knows the lyrics to every single song by the Smashing Pumpkins. michael.riedel@nypost.com NEW YORK POST is a registered trademark of NYP Holdings, Inc. nypost.com , nypostonline.com , and newyorkpost.com are trademarks of NYP Holdings, Inc. I think Facebook maybe has taken its toll on readership since one only has so much time per day to devote to browsing websites. Have fun nin South Africa; see you in Copenhagen in a few weeks! I do read all of the posts. But like Dave, I most enjoy discussions about the words and music. And although I do have a Facebook page, I don't do much with it. Too much going on for me to follow. I guess I'm just not the Facebook type. I do remember that somebody had put a copy of the movie 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' up on EBay a few years ago and listed that it starred Joni Mitchell. The name of the actor that starred in that movie is actually John Cameron Mitchell. There was bit of a stir on the list about it and I even emailed EBay and indignantly demanded that Joni's name be removed from the listing. lol! I recently did a scan of JMDL archives, looking for old posts that I had written since I've had so many computer/email melt-downs over the years. I put a bunch of them into a G-mail account because they are almost like a blog or journal in some ways and I wanted to have them at hand. My, I used to be rather snotty in some of my posts! Hopefully I've outgrown at least some of that! lol!
