They are now playing the best Song of Suburbia ever according to the DJ: The Hissing of Summer Lawns. That's all I need is Joni playing piano, ya know? I really like the way she did this back in 1985 (25 years ago? What the hell?) I like the way she pauses between, "You could get to be a big wig..." and then, "financier". Only Joni would hold back a word like "financier" as a kind of joke. It's like a computer nerd joke or something. It's so cool because that first line could stand on its own, but then she has icing for the cake too. Can I get an amen? I've always thought Joni never needed anyone else but herself accompanying her, especially the piano. I thought her orchestral phase, including the tour, was a lost opportunity. Oh to have been able to see her alone at the piano onstage doing all her own career long compositions once more. Last chance, lost.... I do like that song for so many reasons and the piano version is just so cool, because it kind of deconstructs all that synth stuff and you get to hear the piano. You're talking about the Rock Master class one, n'est-ce pas? I enjoy that pause, but also her voice, which takes on a snarky tone on that particular phrase, both on the DED album version and on this piano-only version. I enjoy the sarcasm. Since you mentioned it, and since I already had I-tunes open, I gave both versions a listen. I also noticed that the picture that came up on the master class version was a beautiful photo, and I have no idea where it came from. Most likely I downloaded it whenever and wherever I got this recording from. I've attached it and Jim should get it, but jmdl won't because Smoe don't like attachments. If anyone would like it, email me privately and I'll forward it. And speaking of DED and piano bits, the demo version of "Good friends" is great too as another deconstructed version and gives a great idea of how Joni tinkles them ivories. If I were less lazy and/or my piano-playing skills were better, I'd want to play this one. I suppose I could do it if I tried. Oh, the trials of the underachiever. ________________________________ From: Jim L'Hommedieu To: Catherine McKay ; joni@smoe.org Sent: Wed, August 11, 2010 9:36:59 PM Subject: Joni playing piano Today I played a live track of Joni doing "Dog Eat Dog" without a band, on piano. I never did get it. Someone was going to send it to me but it just didn't happen. I know it was a while ago but, if anyone has any of the music, would you mind contacting me off list about sending it as CDR or mp3 or whatever. I'm not fussy. Sorry for sending this to all but I don't have email addresses for all who were there; and had to keep this jc in case anyone who was there is Joni-only. Thanks. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2010 #223 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
