One of Hillary's "convenient fictions" according to this post on the Chelsea Hotel blog - http://bit.ly/98s7Io "The wedding will take place in Rhinebeck, New York, which is part of Dutchess county, a dutchess being just what I would be if America had a proper class system. Also, Rhinebeck is the birthplace of Rufus Wainwright, which reminds me that I need to email him to get him to come and sing that Leonard Cohen song Dad likes so much. Oh no, Mom is the one who likes "Hallelujah." The one Dad likes is "Chelsea Hotel." He told me that's really how I got my name (not Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Mornings," another of Mom's "convenient fictions"). He really likes the beds there. Maybe Rufus can sing that, too." I'm not sure what he's saying here. *** Musical genius is not an understatement at all, but I still have trouble describing what it is about Joni's music that I find so incredible and moving. All the imagery, for sure, in her lyrics; her imagery is so powerful. "They wilt the grass they walk upon; they leach the light out of a room." That gives you the heebie-jeebies by itself, and then she sings it and it makes you feel sorry for "good" nuns everywhere! But we have all heard of the kind of whom she speaks. *** Is anyone in our group an expert at caring for injured wild birds? A northern flicker hit a window yesterday and now falls over when it tries to walk or fly. We gave it water and raspberries just now; it's in a cardboard box with a lid, sitting on grass; it ate a raspberry immediately, which gives me hope that it has a chance. I have been so busy with company for a week and then a day of travelling, that I hesitate to get into my vehicle and drive two hours to take it to a wildlife rescue clinic in the city. So my fingers are crossed that it will recover and fly off back to its nest, where I hope there isn't a brood of babies starving. Northern flickers are beautiful birds. Bold colouring. It reminds me of another George Thorogood quote where he something to the effect of "I don't have to write any songs because Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley already wrote all of the good ones". Which sort of translates the same. That is to say, if you're a composer or musical genius of Joni's caliber, the bar is very high and the expectations are great. Oftentimes pleasing yourself and/or meeting your own standards can be the hardest part, let alone please the public, critics, etc. So George's back-handed compliment was that because he knows his limitations the bar is lower, the pressure to excel at a Joni Mitchell kind of level is pretty much mitigated. People can enjoy him singing and playing a track like "Bad To The Bone" without comparing it to "Down To You" or "Borderline" or "Hejira", because he just doesn't have those kinds of songwriting chops. That's my interpretation of the statement anyway.
