Alan Pownall's debut album, True Love Stories is out on Mercury and, according to the Sunday Times, the tracks currently inspiring him are Tom Petty: The Apartment Song, Roy Orbison: In Dreams and Joni Mitchell: A Case of You, which he describes as "the closest thing to a perfect song I have ever heard". Good judgement I say. Jacky ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 2010 06:14:29 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Extremely Obscure Joni Mention Fred Neil is great. What a voice! and what a guitar player! The CD I bought is called "The sky is falling" and it's all, or mostly, live stuff. I also have some FN stuff that I've downloaded from here and there but it's very hard to find his stuff. I don't know if you know this place but recently my son and I discovered a store called Soundscapes, which is on College between Bathurst and Christie. They sell a lot of stuff you can't find anywhere else in Toronto: a lot of indie stuff, but also a lot of classic and hard-to-find folk, soul, jazz and other kinds of music - not the stuff you find at HMV and so on. http://www.soundscapesmusic.com/ ________________________________ From: "Stephen_Epstein@hugoboss.com" To: Catherine McKay Cc: Jim Kauffman ; joni@smoe.org Sent: Sat, July 24, 2010 9:05:58 PM Subject: Re: Extremely Obscure Joni Mention Catherine, Fred Neil is THE BEST! so glad you know and have discovered him.which one did you buy? he was a great songwriter and a brilliant 12 string guitar strummer. wrote the quintessential song for the soundtack of Midnight Cowboy. somewhere on the list there was discussion that Joni wrote one, but Fred's was chosen. I could talk to you for hours about him, got everything he ever did. When Kakki and I met up with Joni a few years back, just after 9/11, I mentioned to Joni that the world would be a better place if Fred was still alive.... there was a discussion about today's audience not knowing, but I think she agreed with us!! There is a great recording of Fred and Joni @ a save the whales benefit somewhere on the list, in San Franciso. bestStephen in Toronto ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 2010 06:15:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Save The Whales Mark, you rock! Thanks for this. I probably downloaded it from DAD when it was on - in fact, I'm sure I did, but I lost a lot of stuff when my external hard drive crashed. Odds are I had burned a CD of it, but try finding that stuff in my cramped apartment. I'd have to go through lots of boxes that are stashed in closets and under beds. ________________________________ From: Mark-Leon Thorne To: joni@smoe.org Cc: Stephen_Epstein@hugoboss.com Sent: Sun, July 25, 2010 4:25:15 AM Subject: Save The Whales Hi Stephen, Catherine and everyone. If I have ever heard this set before, I don't remember it. I was blown away by 'Shadows and Light'. Would this be what you would call Joni de-constructing her own song? The guitar riff sounds similar to 'Coyote' to my ears and she almost completely changes the melody. A fascinating re-invention, using the instruments at hand (no synthesizer, no layered vocal track or back-up vocal group). The original studio recording had a very tight, structured feel to it, based on the keyboard (synthesizer) and layered vocal backup. This has a very loose, improvisational, bluesy sound to it, especially the vocal. It's also interesting to hear it re-configured for guitar and bass, Jaco brilliant as always. I love it! Just to watching him hunch over clutching his guitar singing and playing---he was lost to another world with his music. His song "Faretheewell(Fred's Tune) is one of my top 10 and I've always believed to be a precursor for Joni's "River." Thanks for for mentioning him. peace~~gene peace, gene - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: "Catherine McKay" Cc: "Jim Kauffman" ; Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2010 6:05 PM Subject: Re: Extremely Obscure Joni Mention > Catherine, Fred Neil is THE BEST! so glad you know and have discovered > him.which one did you buy? he was a great songwriter and a brilliant 12 > string guitar strummer. wrote the quintessential song for the soundtack > of Midnight Cowboy. somewhere on the list there was discussion that Joni > wrote one, but Fred's was chosen.
