David Ryan Adams ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2010 16:11:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 126 - Joe Wilson edition - "Ju-Ly!" Greetings, friends and neighbors and fellow Joni fans around the world, and welcome to a new month and another collection of Joni covers, also from around the world. This month's menagerie comes mostly from the web, recordings from artists that never made it to the stores or even I-tunes but still sound great and deserve to be heard. So don't rush out to your local indie record store to get these because you won't find them. I have indicated after the artists' name where they are from. Thanks to Monica for pointing the way every so often. It's just amazing how much undiscovered greatness is out there and I'm always happy to don my pith helmet and hunt the big (and little) game for you. So let's get right to the countdown - here's a link that'll give it to ya: http://tinyurl.com/269dta7 And here's what awaits: 1.Robert Jones (United Kingdom) - Hejira: This is one that I shared a while back, and I think it's a real dynamo. Robert adds lots of additional musical colors and he's got a great blue-eyed soul voice. The production takes the flow of the track up and down and does a great job of building musical momentum. 2. Mandrup & Darling (Denmark) - Both Sides Now: 3. Mandrup & Darling - A Case Of You: 4. Mandrup & Darling - You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio: 5. Mandrup & Darling - People's Parties: A nice mini-concert from Mandrup & Darling, even if she starts with "Bows and Flows" as in "the cast took their BOWS while the audience thre FLOWers", I can always forgive some minor pronunciation issues when someone is singing out of their mother tongue, it certainly doesn't hurt that the vocals are good and so is the accompaniment, whether it's on piano or guitar. Mandrup & Darling is Anna Kargaard Scharling on voice and guitar, Andreas Riis Mandrup on guitar and piano. They identify themselves as a Joni Mitchell cover band; look out Henning, you have competition. 6. Under The Sky - I Had A King: Very true to Joni's own, which after all is a compliment in itself. 7. Anna Corcoran (Liverpool, NW United Kingdom) - Both Sides Now: Anna's voice is very relaxed and confident, and the piano arrangement has flashes of originality. A solid take on the franchise. 8. Jean-Francois Nadeau (Montreal, QE Canada) - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: One of the few Joni covers that typically calls for TWO comparison's....Joni's vocal and Jaco's bass, which is the stuff on legend on this track, especially the S&L version. Anyway, this is a really really solid version, and both vocal and bass hold up pretty well to the original. Some fine drumming and horn work rounds out a solid track. 9. Howard & The Urban Foxes (London, England) - All I Want: It's easy to instantly reject something that sounds sooo distant from Joni's original and decry it as being awful, but I find this techno-ballad to be affecting in a way, with lots of interesting sounds tucked in there. Give it a couple listens and tell me what you think. 10. The Young Brothers - Woodstock (Nashville, TN USA): Here's a GREAT cover, a country band puts a very outlaw country spin on the hippie anthem in their style with some original harmonies and guitar work. Really great stuff. 11. Laura Beams - Both Sides Now (New South Wales, Australia): Laura's take on the franchise combines a little of Joni's MOA version with some individual flourishes of her own, including a nice flute in the background 12. Northern Dream - A Case Of You (Middlesbrough, NE UK): Nice basic guitar and vocals, given that this wasn't touched up and sanitized, I think they do a great job. 13. Arthur Toran - Urge For Going (Holland - Dutch language): Arthur's voice isn't the best, and the guitar is minimally adequate, but I just love to hear Joni's songs done in a Non-English setting, it always the world seem like a smaller place to me. BSN gets done in lots of languages, but off the top of my head I can't think of another UFG cover that isn't English. 14. Arthur Toran - Woodstock (Dutch): 15. McCall Erickson (Ogden, UT USA) - Both Sides Now: She's a little raw-sounding and (as Randy Jackson would say) pitchy at times but I find this live performance very heartfelt and some nice guitar work to boot. Plus, you can tell from her intro that she's a real fan. 16. Threefold - Edith And The Kingpin (Sydney, Australia): I would guess that EATK makes most of our top ten Joni songs list, and indeed it is becoming a fairly popular cover, probably in small part to the great Herbie Hancock/Tina Turner recording. The vocal here has much more of a pop affectation with some hints of soul, she takes the opportunity to have some fun with it vocally and the sparse electric piano/bass backup is musically very effective. 17. Cactus Acoustic Duo - Carey: 18. Cactus Acoustic Duo - Cactus Tree (Teramo, Italy): Another mini-mini concert, and with a Cactus-sized moniker, you kind of think they would include their namesake song. Pretty guitars and vocals on these. 19. Maartje Houtzager - Both Sides Now (Holland): No pitchiness here; Maartje has a beautiful voice as she navigates the Dianne Reeves arrangement and sounds wonderful doing it, kicking it into a nice mid-tempo after the first verse/chorus combo. A nice jazz trio supports her nicely as well as she stretches the franchise to almost 6 minutes, savoring every note. And that concludes our monthly trip around the world of Joni covers - thanks to those who read this far and checked out the tunes, thanks to the artists who recorded them, and most of all thanks to SIQUOMB who put them out there in the first place! Just wanted share with all my Jonifriends, I'm once again the proud Nana Pearl of a beautiful little granddaughter... Sophie Violet, a baby sister to Lilly who just turned 3. The healthy new baby girl was born on June 22 at 9:57 AM, 7 lb. 11 oz. and 18 in. long. She has dark hair (unusual for our family) and blue eyes. My daughter Marcy and her husband Mike are very proud and happy. (Yes, Marcy is named after the song Marcie. When I shared this with Joni) she said "All the Marcy's and Chelsea's, they're all grown up now".) Lilly is, shall we say, adjusting her new status. She said that "being a big sister is hard work", and that was even before the baby came home from the hospital. She really likes being the total center of attention. It's all wonderful...Steve and I are also very proud and happy, although babysitting for two is going to be a whole other story. Yikes! I'm very thankful for my many blessings. We're also looking forward to coming to Pazfest II on Labor Day Weekend. Wouldn't miss it! Pretty cool. Especially the poem titled 'Penelope Wants to F**k the Sea'. (This is not a joke.) Leslie also got me a ticket (fantastic seat) and put me up for the 'Both Sides Now' concert in Concorde. I regret to say that I lost touch with her. She is a sweet, talented lady.
