I think those pelican images will haunt me forever. What is going to be there for the next generations? I watched a documentary called "The Age of Stupid" the other night. Before seeing it, I didn't have a clue what it was about but, as it turns out, it dealt with the whole global-warming issue and our obsession with and addiction to oil. It was presented as a future archivist (Pete Postelthwaite) in a fortress of some kind in the Arctic, possibly the last man left on earth, looking back at images from our times, and then went into dealing with different people in various parts of the world and how this mess has affected them. One was a young woman in Nigeria, a country which has been destroyed by the oil industry and the fights for oil rights; a couple of young kids living in Jordan, who had been displaced from Iraq due to the war (and whose father was killed in it); a millionaire in India starting up his own domestic airline; an English couple working to get people off oil and onto alternative energy sources (and being fought on their wish to get more wind turbines built in their region): and a guy from New Orleans, who worked for an oil company but who had been a sort of hero during the Katrina days, rescuing people with his boat. I really think we can get off oil and that we need to get off oil, and there are so many reasons, ecological and political, why we need to do this, but the will just isn't there yet, and maybe, by the time it is there, it will be too late. So much of what we use is based on petroleum. ________________________________ From: Michael Paz To: Anita G Cc: jonipeople LIST Sent: Wed, June 9, 2010 11:07:12 AM Subject: Re: Gas Leaks and Oil Spills VLJC I am totally sick about the entire mess. That seems like construction 101. Every house I know of has master shut off valves for gas and water. Why would they not build something like at the start of the pipeline? Maybe there's a perfectly logical explanation, but I haven't heard one yet.
