Again! I got the joy once again of hearing Dave & Robin perform their Songs of Joni Mitchell show. My God, they sounded even better than before and I can't believe that's possible. Wonderful arrangements with lots of musical surprises and top-notch talent. Thank you guys so much for putting your hearts and souls into this music. I thought last night this just has to continue to be put out there for people to keep hearing and absorbing. Of course after lo these many, many years of taking it all in, it runs through me like "holy wine." But people need to keep getting exposed to that level of musicianship and writing from Joni. It just doesn't exist anywhere else. And to hear/see it performed at that high level is just such a treat. Thank you, thank you, thank you, all! See you at the next performance. (And everyone has to bring two new people to keep expanding the listener base!) There is also a snippet of an interview with Judy at the piano playing and singing bits of 'My Father', 'Barbara Allen' and 'Send in the Clowns'. It is amazing that this voice still sounds so pure, on-pitch and beautiful. She is amazing. I finally bought Duncan Sheik's cover of Court & Spark. I really do like this cover for several reasons. I had previously only heard Will Carroll's vocal cover. He changed the male subject to a female one, whereas, Duncan Sheik changes the person perspective to make himself the subject. I find this fascinating. "The more you talked to me, the more you reached me but, you couldn't let go of LA - city of the fallen angels". Although Joni's original is an insight into her way of thinking (as is all of her songs), C&S sung this way seems like you're listening to an old flame of Joni's giving his perspective on Joni's mind. It is less accusatory and more like a diary of events and an acknowledgement of weaknesses. He switches back to take on some of weaknesses in Joni when he sings, "You saw me mistrusting and still acting kind. You saw how I worried sometimes, I worry sometimes". Maybe John Guerin didn't suffer those weaknesses but it's interesting how Duncan almost creates a new persona with this. Musically, it's not cheesy or over the top or boring with a nice ethereal guitar threading through the light piano riff that Joni created for it.
