The VG-8 is a modeler and it emulates guitars, amps, mics, tunings, effects, and dynamics (like compressors or limiters etc) and it is part of the chain of things you can have per patch or sound. Lieve in London - ----------- Date: Sun, 2 May 2010 19:41:14 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: THE 2010 JMDL ANNUAL PLEDGE DRIVE/COVERS CD PROJECT Dear Joni list friends, As Robin floated last week, about an idea to help Les cover his costs for the great JoniMitchell.com website we all love, here is what we've come up with for a fundraiser. THE PLEDGE Les needs $1000 by August 1st 2010 to keep the website afloat this year. There are over 1000 JMDL members. You do the math. We are, with his blessing, proposing a pledge-based fundraiser to get him to his goal this year, and each year subsequently I hope. As times are tight for many, the pledged amount can be anything you can afford (but let's say US $5 minimum). There is a PayPal button here: http://jonimitchell.com/donate.cfm with a mailing address as well for US checks if you are not a Paypal user. Each person who makes their pledge will receive, as a premium, the link to download an "album" of Joni Mitchell covers created by JMDL members for JMDL members. All proceeds will go directly to JoniMitchell.com. Note: we could run into potential licensing hot water if this turns into a "release" to the general public, so it needs to remain a private in-house "tape swap" thing. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2010 11:58:54 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: THE 2010 JMDL ANNUAL PLEDGE DRIVE/COVERS CD PROJECT I have already contributed to the site this year, but I will pledge another contribution and a musical contribution as well. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of > Lieve Reckers > Sent: Monday, May 03, 2010 11:35 AM > To: jonilist JMDL > Cc: Dave Blackburn > Subject: re: THE 2010 JMDL ANNUAL PLEDGE DRIVE/COVERS CD PROJECT > > Dear Dave and Robin, thank you so much for an EXCELLENT initiative! > I will > definitely pledge a contribution, and trust that this initiative will > be a > total success. Volume 124 - May Day May Day! May Day! Joni Covers spotted and coming in at 10 O'clock! Fire when ready! Well, I SHOULD have been ready a couple of days ago but am just now getting my act together - had to finish up with a local theatre production first. But here they are, another sweet 18 (some sweeter than others mind you) recordings to add to our collection, now at 3,214 covers and still climbing fast. And as always this is a varied amalgamation of goodies from around the world and across the decades. You can download the lot right here: http://tinyurl.com/258pd38 And when you give them a test drive around the block, this is what you'll be listening to: 1. Sarah Corman - From her 2009 release, Sarah hails from Minnesota, studied at UCLA, and now resides in NYC performing solo and also with a couple other groups. Her voice has a childlike playful quality that I really like. A fun way to kick off #124. 2. The Acoustic Guitar Troubadours - Free Man In Paris: 3. The Acoustic Guitar Troubadours - Both Sides Now: As you can probably guess, these are acoustic guitar tunes, would like to have seen a little more showmanship but they sound pretty nice as they are. These also come from 2009. 4. Nina Ebbenhout - Both Sides Now: Nina's German, but sings without any accent or indication of that. And just when you think it's going to be a boring BSN, she cuts loose with a looser jazzy feel and spices it up a bit, stretching it out to a 5.5 minute gem. Plus - she's pretty hot. 5. Minako Yoshida & Kazumi Watanabe - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 6. Minako Yoshida & Kazumi Watanabe - Both Sides Now: I like both of these a bunch - GPPH is vocal and electric guitar, and there's a great instrumental jam in the center, just like a big chocolate-covered cherry. The Japanese Duo goes acoustic for BSN with equally pleasing results, a very emotional and heartfelt vocal. 7. Amazin' Blue - River: Acapella from The University of Michigan. From their 2002 release, a nice arrangement and some fine voices. 8. Nokie Edwards - Both Sides Now: This was a bit of a surprise...Nokie was one of the guitar slingers in the surf-rock group The Ventures (who also recorded BSN in their own style) so I was expecting something along those lines from this one...not so. It's more of a jazz-lite Kenny G kinda thing, pretty but a tad bland for my taste. 9. Be Sharp - Big Yellow Taxi: More acapella, this time from Germany. A bit of a different arrangement as they take it from mellow to fast, as if the taxi is stopped at a red light and then revs up to take away her old man. They do a good job. 10. David Hilyard - Both Sides Now: A fingerpicked acoustic version, inspired by the Randy Scruggs arrangement on 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Very pretty. Now sit back and enjoy another mini-concert: 11. Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - Amelia 12. Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - A Case Of You 13. Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - Borderline 14. Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - Woodstock 15. Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - Cherokee Louise 16. Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - Hejira: A wonderful, engaging 6-pack from Russian artists Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov, he plays piano, she sings and as you can see they pick some nice deep tracks and do them all quite well. Interesting to hear songs that I'm so used to hearing on guitar played on piano (like Hejira). 17. Jo Anne Kurman - Both Sides Now: Jo Anne's had a very varied career, starting out as a Disneyland performer, singing backup for Iron Butterfly, performing in bluegrass and wild west shows, and much more. This simple straighforward reading of the franchise comes from her 2005 release where she honored her favorite folk performers of the 60's and 70's. 18. Shirley Douglas - Big Yellow Taxi: A corny bite of cheese from 1980. A good note to close on I suppose. And that's it for May - hope you like it, hope you some of it, I'm betting you'll like MOST of it. Let me know what you think! Another retro volume is up in a couple weeks and maybe some other surprises along the way. Bob NP: Tatyana Balakirsky & Alex Nadjarov - Cherokee Louise ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2010 18:58:43 -0600 From: Walt Breen Subject: Speaking of Sisotowbell Lane... Hi gang, Seeing that video of Joni singing Sisotowbell Lane brought back an itch of a memory that I can't seem to scratch. Remember Captain Kangaroo (I'm sure 95% of us do)? I loved it as a kid, and then when my little sister Caroline was a kid, I'd watch it with her. In addition to some sophisticated and dada humor (Mr. Moose and the ping-pong balls come to mind), there were some lovely songs on the show, most of them repeated from time to time. One of my favorites was Inchworm (The Counting Song), and another was a folky song that was accompanied by a series of lovely pastoral images. Is there any chance at all that it could have been S. Lane? My little sister would have been 6, and I 12, when STAS came out. How would one find out?
