Can't review it, as I haven't read it, but I checked it out, along with the author because it looked like a pretty expensive book to be something light and fluffy. ($45 at amazon.ca for example.) The author is a professor of music theory at Baylor University and he has written a book on Paul Simon (The Words and Music of Paul Simon), and at amazon they have that "look inside" feature for the Simon book, so judging by the similar title and price of both books, I'd hazard a guess that there will be a lot of theory and analysis of the music, so it should be interesting. (And I guess if I had read further down in the description, I'd have seen that to begin with.) Some info on the author: http://www.baylor.edu/provost/index.php?id=10593 A look inside the Simon book: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/reader/0275991636/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link I may just buy this one. ________________________________ From: Les Irvin To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Wed, April 28, 2010 12:58:47 PM Subject: has anyone purchased this book? http://jonimitchell.com/library/viewmedia.cfm?id=85 if so, can you give us a review? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2010 13:01:04 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Re: has anyone purchased this book? Interesting. I wonder if it's similar to the Lloyd Whitesell book which was kind of a slog, even for a music instructor such as myself. All the analysis in the world, however, doesn't really explain the magic of the synergy between words and music, and the style and cultural zeitgeist that a great artist has flowing through their pen. ie you can learn the chords, annotate all the lyric references, point out the interval contour of the melody and say that a groove is based on an african tradition without actually cracking the nut of what makes great art great. I'll still probably get it though. I may just get it from the library, which probably means quite a wait, if this book has just come out. As well, unless there's a CD with it so you can play the pieces they refer to, it may be a frustrating read. I think this is one case where maybe having a lecture (on DVD for example) with the person talking about the musical structure and playing the music they're talking about, would be preferred. And I'm behind on my reading and just can't read as quickly as I used to (and tend to fall asleep after only a few pages), so... do NOT hold your breath waiting for my review! I did buy the Lloyd Whitesell book shortly after it came out and still haven't read it. sigh. ________________________________ From: T Peckham To: Catherine McKay Cc: Les Irvin ; joni@smoe.org; Bob.Muller@fluor.com Sent: Wed, April 28, 2010 4:14:20 PM Subject: Re: has anyone purchased this book? As did I...I finished it on the plane on the way to Lucy's Jonifest and gave it to Sir van Tiel as a thank you gift for showing me his wonderful country. Like Dave says, it was a REAL difficult read, especially for someone less musically educated like me. There were some places where my eyes glazed a bit but other places that were very compelling. It certainly gives you an appreciation for the musical complexity of Joni's compositions, whether by design or by accident.
