Hi Bene, That's the first I've heard that story, or even of this song. Wikipedia also another Joni story of the recording of the song: Joni Mitchell later spoke to writer Iain Blair about the recording experience: "I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was literally starving when we did the session 'cuz my yoga teacher had sent me to a psychic dietician who, while rubbing her chin and swinging her arm around in a circle, had diagnosed a lot of food allergies. The result was, predictably, that I was hardly allowed to eat anything, so by the time I arrived with an apple and a rice patty, my poor stomach was making all these strange noises. Then we get in the studio, and the engineer says he can't record 'cuz he's picking up some weird rumbling sound coming from my direction. (She laughs). And it was all pretty ironic, considering the subject matter." *Chicago Tribune*, May 1, 1985. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tears_Are_Not_Enough Mini-documentary and music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_5ISeBOv1k&NR=1 - - -Corey ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2010 11:50:57 +0100 From: Anita G Subject: Re: Odds and Ends Walt wrote: "As much as I love Joni's original version of Cherokee Louise, and Anita & the Mutts' version," YAYYYYYYyyyy I am in the band! Makes sense to me, that Louise has run away (again and for good reason) and yes Joni knows where she goes, under the Broadway (and perhaps other) bridges in Saskatoon. Lots of speculation around this story that runs parallel to the news about Aboriginal girls and women being tossed around like garbage, supposedly running away, never to be seen again, that sort of thing. Anyway.... Wasnt Joni singing about a friend of hers? In part, Im asking to promote discussion, especially for the newer ones who have joined us, and in part, I cant remember the entire back story. I had a Joni friend in spirit who used to nail this song, it was spine tingling gorgeous to hear a male voice on this one. Kind of a similar reaction to hearing our very own Leslie Ross sing Magdalene Laundries. Of course, in Joni's case she was never a hit machine, and she's assembled a number of compilations of her own, so check those out too but to my tastes she tended to use those to push some of her stuff that was not popular, sometimes for good reason. Anyway, here's what I filled up a CD with for ya....with 8 seconds left over: 1. Shadows & Light (Hissing Of Summer Lawns) Joni's work is all about duality to what better way to start than this hypnotic track. 2. Little Green (Blue) Because her angst behind the decision to give up her daughter drove so much of her work. 3. That Song About The Midway (Clouds) 4. Harlem in Havana (Taming The Tiger) Two great carnival songs with some wonderful music and great visual imagery. 5. Down To You (Court And Spark) a beautiful mini-symphony 6. Ethiopia (Dog Eat Dog) One of my favorite 80's songs of hers, again powerful musically and lyrically (you could say that about most of her stuff I guess) 7. The Magdalene Laundries (Turbulent Indigo) More brilliant social commentary 8. Strong And Wrong (Shine) And we complete the triad of social songs with this recent one which I like a lot 9. Barangrill (For The Roses) Sounds light but it's anything but 10. Two Grey Rooms (Night Ride Home) Very poignant story, with a melody to match and Joni on the piano in the 90's 11. Furry Sings The Blues (Hejira) For the imagery and story-telling 12. Cactus Tree (Song To A Seagull) lovely song and one of Joni's songs that she places herself right in the middle of. 13. Conversation (Ladies Of The Canyon) Again, a pretty song with a deep emotional core. 14. Man To Man (Wild Things Run Fast) Just heard this one today, and like Cactus Tree it matches some lovely melody with some personal insights 15. The Dawntreader (Travelogue) Originally on her debut, she upped the ante by filling in the blanks with an array of musical color and really took the song to another level. 16. The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines (Shadows & Light) 17. Hejira (Shadows & Light) The band behind Joni on this live album is nothing short of astonishing. The playfulness of Dry Cleaner makes you smile while the musicianship blows your mind. As for Hejira, it's beyond calling it a "song". It is a piece of high art, containing as much beauty as anything I know of, and again the musicians, particulary Jaco Pastorius & Michael Brecker are simply phenomal. I was instantly hooked on their music. I am sorry that it took 40 years to find out about it. I sent this story and links to all my friends upon hearing "Angels Do." I rarely send something out to burden my friends, but they'll forgive me this one. It is oddly in character for Joni to be driving a beat up Ford Pinto through the wilds of BC. I don't see her driving some land-boat, and I'd speculate that it was a borrowed vehicle. Who knows Joni's cars? What a fascinating time and place to be. I have longed for such a scene all my life, to be is a beautiful community with a network of musicians and artists with whom to create the story of our lives. We visited this area (Vancouver Island) on our honeymoon in 1976 and fell in love with its beauty and many wonders. I can understand why Joni keeps a place there. I might take it over heaven myself, given the choice. A number of years ago, I made a compilation for one of my nephews who asked me for recommendations. Although I'll be damned if I can remember what I chose, I'm sure my list was very similar to Bob Muller's. As I recall, I went for one or two from each album and had a helluva time narrowing it down, but I ended up sending him two CDs worth of stuff. I also thought about the other compilations Joni put together in recent years, but my reaction was also similar to Mullers: there's a lot of pushing of the Geffen years stuff and, while there's nothing particularly wrong with that and they are Joni's selections, there's a bit too much from one particular era or decade, when there's so much more to choose from that would cover a broader spectrum of her work. ________________________________ From: Corey Blake To: joni@smoe.org Cc: RichKochman@yahoo.com Sent: Thu, April 15, 2010 1:55:45 PM Subject: Re: FW: need Joni recommendations What do people think about supplementing "Hits" with "Misses"? Hejira (Shadows & Light) The band behind Joni on this live album is > nothing short of astonishing. The playfulness of Dry Cleaner makes you > smile while the musicianship blows your mind. As for Hejira, it's beyond > calling it a "song". It is a piece of high art, containing as much beauty > as anything I know of, and again the musicians, particulary Jaco Pastorius > & Michael Brecker are simply phenomal. Had to close with this one because > it cannot be topped. I would be very tempted to put the Shadows and Light 'Amelia' in there right before it. Pat Metheny's beautiful guitar solo at the end is such a nice bridge between the two songs. But, there are time constraints and maybe that would be too much from S&L (sorry Catherine - he-he). Court & Spark is, I think, Joni's biggest seller; at the time, she was on the charts, it seemed she was destined for major stardom. Had she stuck to a musical formula, maybe she would have had Madonna-like success. But, artist that she is, she did not want to be stuck in a box, and pursued her muse, went further into jazz, and went astray of pop music, and mainstream popularity. What Joni album next? I would suggest Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, or the sequel to C&S (& somewhat jazzier) Hissing of Summer Lawns. I am a big Fiona fan, too, and have seen her in concert several times. I think she is, like Joni, an artistic genius. Pawn is my favorite but they are all good-though I greatly prefer the "leaked" version of EM to the official release. Great that you are getting into playing music. What instrument do you play? (Okay, so we missed on some things, like mileage in Canada . . . it got fixed in the paperback, tho!) :-D Sheila kindly invited me to stay in touch via email (and now FaceBook), so we continue to discuss all things Joni (and Carly and Carole). I mentioned the recent renewed discussion around the Joni/Jackson relationship and its aftermath, and the fact that people still have a lot of questions about it. Sheila sent me this and asked me to post it on the list. I know she welcomes all questions, most of which she answers. ;-) T Dear JMDL-ers: Hello. I am the author of *Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon -- and the Journey of a Generation.* I understand that a number of you have been conversing about the account in my book that Joni's tumultuous relationship with Jackson Browne, and her general vulnerability at that point in her life, led her to make what *she* has called a "suicide attempt" in the early '70s. Because this is one of the most explosive accounts in my book, and because sometimes people in other fields don't realize what goes into researching, writing, verifying, and legal-vetting a nonfiction book about living subjects (that has not been authorized by them, or vetted by them), I thought I would step in to explain how I acquired, and verified, that piece of information. A bit of backstory: When I received my book contract, I immediately contacted Joni's representatives, Macklam Feldman Management. The rep declined to forward Joni my letter (she had so many requests and was concentrating on her painting, etc.) but he wanted me to "stay in touch." A great number of people in Joni's life agreed to speak to me. You can see the breadth of quoted (and some few unnamed) sources in the book. One of my most trusted sources on Joni was a person I have never named - -- in a book with a great number of named sources, there are always some who cannot be named; any journalist will tell you this. This person was a very close daily confidante of Joni's for about ten recent years and remains close to her. This person was someone I had to find -- she/he did not come to me. I was told this person was a deep confidante, and -- there are just ways journalists know this -- it totally checked out. This source told me a number of things in the book and one of the disclosures was the "suicide attempt" (ALWAYS Joni's term, the source told me). Because this was explosive material, I re-asked the source about the details -- the Jackson Browne relationship, the apartment on steep Doheny Drive, the David Geffen phone call/rescue, the "Car on the Hill" -- many times. The source many times re-asserted them, ALWAYS -- always! -- saying that Joni had told many friends this same story (as well as other delicate stories in my book) many times...it was part of what you knew about her when you were taken into the confidence of Joni. I got positive verification of the account -- the suicide attempt, the relationship with Jackson leading up to it, and Joni's abiding animus toward Jackson for this reason -- from three other sources: a person who was very close to Joni during this time (named elsewhere in the book), a subsequent serious boyfriend, named in the book, since deceased; and someone very close to Joni for many recent decades, including today (also quoted in the book). These were all off-the-record confirmations; it was understood that I was backing up the multiply-rendered account of a primary source and that their names would not be used in the book as sources for this, though (as a professional matter of course) could be confidentially named to the lawyer vetting the book for my publisher. Each of these people reiterated what the original source said -- that Joni mentioned this incident a lot. Although David Geffen was named by the primary source as the virtual eyewitness to the suicide attempt, I did not try to contact him. Anything I needed about Geffen's professional relationship with Joni was available elsewhere (and, as readers of my book know, it was never a book about the music industry per se -- as opposed to many, fine, others) and he was by then, frankly, a mega-millionaire Presidential-candidate-maker: I doubted he would give me the interview, and I was almost certain that he would never confirm the suicide attempt story even if he gave the interview. During the researching/writing of the book (2003 - 2007), there was a period of a few weeks, probably around 2005, when I was told by a close friend of Joni's (a woman named as a source in the book) that Joni was going to call me. I rarely left my seat next to the phone. She never called. In the summer of 2007, when my book was being readied for publication, I made several attempts to contact Joni to ask her to affirm, or deny, the veracity of much of the book. I was willing to fly to L.A. for a meeting. Her reps told me she was busy recording SHINE and, furthermore, that she "didn't want to talk about the '60s". The book was fact-checked by three fact checkers, and vetted by the publishing attorney. Two months after the book came out, I had lunch with a book editor (not within Simon & Schuster) to discuss a possible project. This person has edited several book on popular culture and media that were critically acclaimed and which I greatly admired. She/he had not read all of GIRLS - and he/she clearly had not come to the suicide attempt passage. Because he/she said -- in the tone of voice that resonated, *Do I ever have a scoop for you* *that's TOO LATE for you to use*... (journalists hear this a lot): "Guess what? Years ago I was on a beach weekend with David Geffen. And he told me something that will shock you -- Joni Mitchell once made a suicide attempt and he had to come over and rescue her." I told this editor that I was very grateful for her/his disclosure of Geffen's words. Because after much re-confirmation with my original source and the three back-ups, I had confidently put this incident in the book, feeling certain it was true. And now, after the fact but with an unsolicitedness that was gratifying to my conscientious sense of having sought the truth, assessed the material, and*gone * with it...now, through a third party, I got confirmation from David Geffen of the account that I (and the publishing lawyer) had strongly judged to be true. Hope this clears some things up and all best wishes, Sheila ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2010 #103 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
