I saw her show in Montreal last summer. She is indeed very special and very talented. I hope she rises to all the buzz and the reputation that seems to be building around her. _________________________________________________________________ Live connected. She's stated that most of the visuals for the song (Barangrill) came from actual things she witnessed while on the WEST coast (the 3 waitresses, the guy singing like Nat King Cole, etc), and there's nothing contextually to indicate that one of these west coast characters would be heading a couple thousand miles to the other side of the country. My guess is that she is using the word to mean "absurdity"...after all, the next bit says "you just have to laugh 'cause it's all so crazy". Add to all of that the fact that Joni is NOT a fan of the Palmetto State - apparantly she had a bad experience in the state early on in her career. Now, had she mentioned "Folly" in "Blue Motel Room" (which finds her nearby in Savannah), I might argue the other way. I miss cooking with you and hearing you sing. I hope next time we get together we can sing together. I have not bought the new CD yet but will as soon as I get back to the states. Being more of a butterflies and lilac sprays kind of a girl I'm a bit shy with computer communication, but with Dave's gentle nudging here I am. He says there is a tradition for newbies to tell the story of their first connection to Joni. In 1972 I traded in my 1959 Volkswagen van for a brand new Datsun 510 station wagon. It was bright red with a white vinyl roof and the "piece de resistance" was the (optional) AM- FM radio. Ah..... Hi Fidelity!! Two years out of high school and I was stylin'. Go go going on the weekends I traded my passion for horses for traveling adventures. Of course I'd been listening to Joni Mitchell on the radio (I didn't own a home stereo) in high school and it wasn't so much a matter of loving her music as that she was such an intrinsic part of life at that time. Late sixties, Joni Mitchell and teenage longing. In 1975 I hit the road in my Datsun station wagon heading to Boulder, Colorado, my bed roll thrown in the back and hand sewn Indian bedspread curtains flapping in the wind. A newly acquired boom box (cassette player)and a bag full of batteries sat beside me along with my first 2 cassette purchases; Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns. The truth was I had never owned any recordings of Joni Mitchell let alone listened to one of her albums in its entirety. Now I had over 1000 miles and 24 hours from Southern California to the Boulder School of Massage Therapy to get to know her. With drained batteries and stretched cassette tape I was hooked by the time I arrived to Boulder. Joni was my hero. I had never heard anything quite like "Hissing of Summer Lawns" and would never have dreamed that 35 years later I would not only be a singer but record a song (The Jungle Line) from that album..........okay, moving forward to 1985. I am now living in Los Angeles (The San Fernando Valley) with my new boyfriend Rusty. He was a musician, a sax player. We had met, both of us working on a Caribbean cruise ship. He played in the house band and I was doing massage. Being involved with a jazz musician was soon to change my life for good. I would go out to every jazz club in the San Fernando Valley; Dante's, Carmello's, the Baked Potato etc. aand I'm lovin' and soaking it all up. I fell in love with improvisation and the unpredictable nature of the sound. Singing still had not occurred to me but that was soon to change. One of my massage clients had a brother who was the manager of the Yellowjackets. I guess someone had given him a copy of "Dog Eat Dog" and he passed it on to his sister (my client). She didn't like it and asked if I wanted it. Now don't crucify me, but I hadn't owned a Joni record since Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns". So, I enthusiastically accepted the album. Oh my gosh I loved this album. I know it's not one of her most popular albums but I dug it. I loved that it was topical and political and it was edgy. I sang along to the Three Great Stimulants with gusto, and I loved the novelty of Smokin and I'm a Lucky Girl. I memorized all of the songs on DED. Joni was just too cool in my book. Then one day my best girlfriend heard me singing along to DED and liked how I sounded. She encouraged me to keep singing and bought me every one of Joni's albums on vinyl for my birthday. My friend, Teresa was a huge Joni fan and knew all of her albums. So that is when I became a fan. And through the encouragement of my best friend and singing along to Joni's music I began a path at the ripe age of 31 to become a singer. Probably because of my exposure to jazz in L.A. and my love of old standards is why I started out singing jazz professionally. But in 2006 along with my husband of 15 yrs, Dave Blackburn, and our mutual love of JM's music we embarked on our Joni Tribute Band (soon to be named Mutts of Planet) and ultimately our new CD Safaris to the Heart. As Dave quoted in a recent interview, "It was just a good fit". Whew, I hope this is not too long. I want to thank the JMDLers for your generous and kind words about our Safaris CD. This by far has been the most thrilling and gratifying musical project we've ever done and I continue to shake my head in amazement at Joni's genius. How many times can you listen to her and still get tears in your eyes? I would like to leave you with one last question. Are there any other singers that find Help Me to be a challenging song to sing? Much love to all of you, Robin. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Apr 2010 08:11:30 -0700 From: Robin Adler Subject: Re: Hello JMDL What dear people you JMDLers are. It contains 12 songs, featuring "The Most Beautiful Boy in the World" as seen here on you-tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OXROJCCYrI) and the title track, both inspired by the birth of my son, Coltrane. It also includes a bonus track, California, which I wrote about Joni Mitchell and California, hence the Joni content. Some people might have this song as a single from several years ago. I'll post the lyrics below. The cover art is beautiful and was designed by graphic artist, Paul Melroy. It can be viewed on my profile page if you are on facebook. The photo on the back, of Coltrane and I, was taken this past December when we went to Indian Rocks Beach in St. Petersburg (hi Jerry!) The first hundred copies will be numbered and autographed. To order a copy, send $12 dollars (+ $3 s&h/$5 international) to Victor Johnson P.O. Box 43 Decatur, GA 30031. You can also send payment via paypal at waytoblue@comcast.net. ***special deal- 2 copies for $20 (+$3s&h)*** Thank you for listening peace through music, Victor California by Victor Johnson (c) 2010 Way to Blue Music California, valley of sunshine Carry me to your golden shore Wind around the moonlit highway Up above the mountain cliffs Sweet lady of the canyon Won't you take me for a ride Fill me with your perfect vision Lead me to this holy land. California, coming closer Starry skies and sleepless nights Early morning passion thunder And the love keeps pouring out Walk me through your redwood pastures Beneath the trees so high and wide Lay me down in fertile valleys Morning glory on the vine California, take me home Brighten my southern sky Sing me an unbroken lullaby I'll spread my wings, teach me to fly California, lonely sky bird Fly over ocean of white clouds Gaze down on a deep blue heaven Shining in the sunlit sky Dream of wooden ships and mermaids Dolphins jumping in the sea With no particular destination California's just around the bend. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2010 #96 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
