Thanks to everyone who has ordered it so far and given us such nice feedback. Dear listers, Thanks to all those giving our Safaris to the Heart a good listen. It is the culmination of several years work, developing the arrangements, finding the perfect band, and then months in the studio. We've sent a couple of copies to Joni herself via her management so, if they pass it on to her, she might be intrigued enough by a CD and a band named after lines in her lyrics to give it a listen, Morgellon's discomfort permitting. You can be SURE I'll tell you about it if she responds! A few folks have reported difficulties in ordering, trying to use the click through link at http://jonimitchell.com/ and the PayPal button at http://www.robinadler.com/ . I talked to PayPal and they tested the link and assured me it is fine but said often you need to delete the browser's cache when links are acting weird. So if you encounter error messages please try that. Of course you can also go 20th century and mail a check for $15 per copy + $3 for up to 3 copies shipping (US only I'm afraid, foreign checks won't work) to us. Make it out to Robin Adler 1008 S. Being more of a butterflies and lilac sprays kind of a girl I'm a bit shy with computer communication, but with Dave's gentle nudging here I am. He says there is a tradition for newbies to tell the story of their first connection to Joni. In 1972 I traded in my 1959 Volkswagen van for a brand new Datsun 510 station wagon. It was bright red with a white vinyl roof and the "piece de resistance" was the (optional) AM- FM radio. Ah..... Hi Fidelity!! Two years out of high school and I was stylin'. Go go going on the weekends I traded my passion for horses for traveling adventures. Of course I'd been listening to Joni Mitchell on the radio (I didn't own a home stereo) in high school and it wasn't so much a matter of loving her music as that she was such an intrinsic part of life at that time. Late sixties, Joni Mitchell and teenage longing. In 1975 I hit the road in my Datsun station wagon heading to Boulder, Colorado, my bed roll thrown in the back and hand sewn Indian bedspread curtains flapping in the wind. A newly acquired boom box (cassette player)and a bag full of batteries sat beside me along with my first 2 cassette purchases; Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns. The truth was I had never owned any recordings of Joni Mitchell let alone listened to one of her albums in its entirety. Now I had over 1000 miles and 24 hours from Southern California to the Boulder School of Massage Therapy to get to know her. With drained batteries and stretched cassette tape I was hooked by the time I arrived to Boulder. Joni was my hero. I had never heard anything quite like "Hissing of Summer Lawns" and would never have dreamed that 35 years later I would not only be a singer but record a song (The Jungle Line) from that album..........okay, moving forward to 1985. I am now living in Los Angeles (The San Fernando Valley) with my new boyfriend Rusty. He was a musician, a sax player. We had met, both of us working on a Caribbean cruise ship. He played in the house band and I was doing massage. Being involved with a jazz musician was soon to change my life for good. I would go out to every jazz club in the San Fernando Valley; Dante's, Carmello's, the Baked Potato etc. aand I'm lovin' and soaking it all up. I fell in love with improvisation and the unpredictable nature of the sound. Singing still had not occurred to me but that was soon to change. One of my massage clients had a brother who was the manager of the Yellowjackets. I guess someone had given him a copy of "Dog Eat Dog" and he passed it on to his sister (my client). She didn't like it and asked if I wanted it. Now don't crucify me, but I hadn't owned a Joni record since Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns". So, I enthusiastically accepted the album. Oh my gosh I loved this album. I know it's not one of her most popular albums but I dug it. I loved that it was topical and political and it was edgy. I sang along to the Three Great Stimulants with gusto, and I loved the novelty of Smokin and I'm a Lucky Girl. I memorized all of the songs on DED. Joni was just too cool in my book. Then one day my best girlfriend heard me singing along to DED and liked how I sounded. She encouraged me to keep singing and bought me every one of Joni's albums on vinyl for my birthday. My friend, Teresa was a huge Joni fan and knew all of her albums. So that is when I became a fan. And through the encouragement of my best friend and singing along to Joni's music I began a path at the ripe age of 31 to become a singer. Probably because of my exposure to jazz in L.A. and my love of old standards is why I started out singing jazz professionally. But in 2006 along with my husband of 15 yrs, Dave Blackburn, and our mutual love of JM's music we embarked on our Joni Tribute Band (soon to be named Mutts of Planet) and ultimately our new CD Safaris to the Heart. As Dave quoted in a recent interview, "It was just a good fit". Whew, I hope this is not too long. I want to thank the JMDLers for your generous and kind words about our Safaris CD. This by far has been the most thrilling and gratifying musical project we've ever done and I continue to shake my head in amazement at Joni's genius. How many times can you listen to her and still get tears in your eyes? I would like to leave you with one last question. Are there any other singers that find Help Me to be a challenging song to sing? Much love to all of you, Robin. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2010 20:18:34 +0100 From: joe farrell Subject: re: The Ghost of Faffner Hall I've never seen this before either. the scenes in the car are an absolute joy. like the wild impresario says at the start of the video Joni sounds, and looks, "wonderful, magnificent". thanks for the link Debs. I had an idea in my head that Joni's music had arrived in your life later in life, but how wrong can a girl be? It's a great story, how you came to do what you do. As for your question 'Are there any singers out there who find Help Me a challenge to sing?' NO darling, only you. The rest of us soar effortlessly through the octaves, the vocal leaps and manage all the words and backing vocals with no problem at all. I guess you need to practice more. Love Anita ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2010 21:17:29 +0100 From: Anita G Subject: Re: Lou Rhodes (Joni Covers Content) I have just discovered that Laura Marling used to sing with Noah and the Whale. I had saved Noah and the Whale in a sonos file/queue along with our Jenny Goodspeed because it all seemed to run together so well, but I reckon Jenny's album 'Under The Ash Tree' would work very well with 'I speak because I can.' I always remember how the first time I hear Joni, I'd never heard anything like her. I guess there must be influences on Joni, but all I could hear was Debussy at that time. I often wondered where the yodelly, octave leaps she did (as in Night In The City) came from. To my English 14 year old ears, it sounded so different. I'd always associated that sound with the Swiss and nowhere else. Anyone help me out with that? It's good to hear from you. I've heard your singing before, because I downloaded the Jonifest/California and Holycombe performances, thanks to Dave. I do not tire of listening to them and I think you've accomplished among the best Joni covers ever. As well, I truly enjoyed your travelling with Joni story. Makes me want to get in a car and drive. For me, what's difficult about "Coyote" is remembering all the words. And yet, it's a cinch compared to "Don Juan's reckless daughter" (I always want to say "wreckless" - Don Juan's trainwreck of a daughter - heh-heh.) Trying to memorize those lyrics and get them out quickly, while singing, continues to be a challenge. ________________________________ From: Robin Adler To: Deb Messling Cc: joni@smoe.org Sent: Sun, April 4, 2010 9:50:27 PM Subject: Re: Hello JMDL Okay if K.D.
