I was watching Jessica on The Actor's Studio one time when a young actor stood up and said, "Miss Lange you have the three things I want most: An Oscar, a Tony, and Sam Shepard." Hi gang, After I got over my initial suerprise over Willie's apparent rancor, I gave his comments some thought: <> Joni has admitted to a substantial amount of navel-gazing and thinking about love and her relationship history: Maybe I've never really really loved I guess that is the truth I've spent my whole life in clouds At icy altitudes And her herart is full and hollow Like a cactus tree Why do I keep moving From man to man to man But it seems unlikely that she's never really loved: I'm a lucky girl I've found my friend I love the man beside me We love the open road and many others <<2. If you say that you believe in a God, why do you disgrace Him?>> At themoment, I can't think of and specific lyric in which she states definitively that she does believe in God, though Jesus, and God in a number of forms, appear in several song: I am up a sycamore Looking through the leaves A Sinner of some position Who in the world can this heart-healer be, This magical physician? In Job's Sad Lament, she pleads with the "silent watchers" to leave her in peace: What have I done to you That you make everythin I dread And everything I fear Come true Although here and in most of the songs that mention The Big Guy, she's either in character (the two foregoing lyrics), or quoting from literature or from the bible itself. I've always thought she was a secular humanist. In any event, how has she disgraced herself? (The question is sincere: I'm curious as to which actions or statements on her part that you're referring to.) <<3. After your failed attempted suicide over the little affair with Jackson Browne, what's stopping you now?>> Ignoring the poor taste of the question for the moment, I admit I was unaware that J. had ever attempted suicide, but a simple answer is that although she grumbles about the state of the world, who doesn't? Who hasn't had a "Hell inb a handbasket" moment? In the meantime, illness aside, she seems pretty happy with her family, a good reason not to commit suicide. I take suicide seriously -- two of my exes made that irreversable choice, as have a number of friends, over the years. I guess it's a personal decision. Joni's only human, and if she did attempt it way back then, and possibly contemplated it other times since, I'm glad she made the decision to live. I hope everything's okay at your end Willie. It has been something of an eye-opener in relation to the characters of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. I'm not usually too interested in knowing the who is who and what is what behind the art, but their story is great. Her writing is definitely a reflection of her voice and the narrative tells a lot about how she remembers things - objects, names, places, photographs, events make up a lot of the text and she weaves her tale between them. Not only is it their story, their love story, but it captures a certain scene in New York so well. GARRET On Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 3:39 PM, Anita G wrote: > Thanks for the link, William. Nonetheless, hearing someone mention so casually Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol etc. is quite something. It certainly did 'capture a certain New York scene' as well as helping me realise I prefer to hear Patti Smith sing rather than read!
