He was a member of the list a while back. Are you still here Gary? I liked these two covers mostly because they are rarities. No offense Bob, but I'm not of the camp that can listen endlessly to yet another cover of a lovely soprano singing BSN. Of course there is so much depth to Joni's catalogue that you could do a whole covers album just on her unreleased stuff. Don't get me wrong Bob, I download and listen to every single song (and am amazed at your research prowess!) :-) And speaking of covers, my favorite cover of all time is Joni's rendition of Trouble Man from the Back to the Garden concert 1998. How did she get the word "pretentious" into that amazing phrasing in the bridge? Ok, that's my rant for this week! :-) Take care, Sue ___________________ /___________________\ ||-------------------|| || Sue Tierney || || sem8@cornell.edu || ||___________________|| || O etch-a-sketch O || \___________________/ "It's all a dream she has awake." - Joni Mitchell - -----Original Message----- Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2010 07:28:44 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Retro Covers, Volume #48 Howdy gang - here's another one of our back pages, for those who didn't catch it the first time. He shares our love of unreleased Joni and does the songs justice with his smooth vocals on these tracks. While I know what you mean about the endless BSN's, I always try and pretend that I am the artist performing the song - they haven't heard it done over 500 times like me, maybe only once or twice, so it's fresh to them and more often than not they bring something new to what is an incredible song. As for recording a whole album of unreleased Joni - Henning & Christina released "Treasures Of Joni Mitchell" back in 2008 and if it's not in your library it definitely needs to be: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bigyellowtaxi6 Great production, great songs (as we know) and Henning brings in a variety of musicians to color the tracks so you get a good variety of sound. And I'm with you on Joni's version of "Trouble Man" (from Kyle Eastwood's record). Wished she would have used that feel as a template for Travelogue as opposed to the orchestrated BSN template. I did do a search on "Joni Mitchell," which turned up an extract of an article dealing with the Olympics from 23 Feb 2010. The extract is below. Not sure if this is it. There is a minor Joni mention. Here's my rough translation of the extract below: The highlight of the opening ceremony of the Olympic games in Vancouver on February 12 was the painful duo consisting of R'n'B starlet Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams, the country's lesser Springsteen. All of which made the absence of greater singers more cruelly felt. If Joni Mitchell had been there, and if Leonard Cohen was there due to the sublime performance of Hallelujah by k. d. lang, all that was missing to complete the country's anglophone Holy Trinity would be Neil Young. Fortunately, two catch-up sessions were proposed, on Feb 18 and 19, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. Was The Fiddle and the Drum done in Vancouver on Feb 18 and 19? If so, then there might be more on that in the whole article. However, you have to subscribe to get any more from the archives and you need to purchase a subscription. I thought at first there was a 30-day free trial, but I guess I read it wrong. Tried to sign up but they wanted my credit card info, so I bailed. ________________________________ From: Les Irvin To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Thu, March 18, 2010 8:36:24 PM Subject: Can anyone read French? sjc There is supposed to be a Joni article at this link, but I'm too dense to find it through the advertising maze.
