But you're right, it definitely stands up to repeated viewings and is always an emotional experience for me. I'm not a Wynonna Judd fan but her comments are SO from the heart that they give me the watery eye everytime. And like you say, watching Joni digging it is a big chunk of icing on the cake. I was reminded of it last week as I was watching Shawn on stage. The Coast to Coast version of Hejira with Bobby McFerrin was AMAZING!! I've seen it before but whoa, so much power in that room. Are there any more cuts from this session? But what I wanted to mention was in both of these videos Joni is wearing some beautiful silver jewelry. The column of Butterflies/dragonflies in the CTC video and the Fishbone earrings and necklace with turquoise beading in the Italian video are really beautiful. She must have an amazing collection. I remember she had many silver pins on her denim jacket in the GAP ad a couple of years ago. I did a pastel drawing of that photo which helps me remember. But just now, I saw a rerun of Law & Order in which Elliot Stabler had a really bad day, and he beat up his locker as he prepared to go home, which made me wonder whether the film's title might have something to do with redirecting anger rather than suppressing it. Of course, this is all speculation, since I didn't see it (or the Oscars). I wouldn't go so far as to say that Joni and Gore Vidal look "alike," but one could be forgiven for thinking that they might be distant cousins... But I think that there is a similarity in their gazes, an intensity and, of course, an amazing intelligence and spirit which the camera reads as springing from a similar source. So, as of today I've been in San Francisco for two weeks, long enough for me to know that I'll be staying (there was always the possibility that I'd get back in my car and head right back to NYC-- LOL), so now I'm ready to let all you Bay area listas know that I'm here and would love to meet those of you I've never met, and would love to see those of you I do know. In two short weeks, I've auditioned for a professional choir I really, really, *really* wanted to join, but alas, it was not meant to be; and auditioned for a back-up singing gig which I *did* get, but from which I've extracted myself because the musical director/composer is certifiably insane, a true megalomaniac who's probably high on meth more often than not. It was equally fascinating and disturbing to spend time with him, and I'm happy to have come to the very sane conclusion that no music gig--even an unpaid (!) one offered by "not a good or great composer, but an *amazing* composer who's writing the greatest songs of our time" (yes, this is a direct quote, emphasis and all)--is worth repeated exposure to mental illness of this magnitude. That's what family is for. So, I don't know if this amounts to arriving in style, but it amounts to... something. I also had the great pleasure of seeing Kate & Jeff on my way up the California coast. Kate was incredibly thoughtful and signed me up for a songwriters' showcase/open mic in Solvang (lovely fake Danish village near their home). I had a great time visiting with the two of them and their amazing dogs. Woof! To conclude, I've been in the middle of a huge life transition for several months now, and now that the physical relocation portion of the transition is somewhat complete, I've had a few moments to breathe and lurk on the list. More than once since arriving here in sunny (?) CA, I have felt tremendous gratitude for this list and everyone I've met because of it. It's impossible to calculate how my life has been enriched by being a member of the jmdl, but at a moment like this in my life, when I've done something so drastic as to drive across the country by myself with my car packed to the visibility-obscuring levels, it's pretty amazing to land here and know that there are birds-of-a-feather people here just waiting to meet. Oh, and Jimmy, I might even get around to writing my JoniFest report now. That would be for the 2009 SoCal fest. I've given up on writing reports for the 2007, 2004, 2003, and 2002 Northeast JoniFests. I moved out here to beautiful (sincerely) West Bountiful, Utah, back in October, after 19 years in SF. Not insane (not at the moment, anyway) -- just broke. I admire your taking this Mary Richards-esque step -- reminds me of my doing the same so many years ago. I struggled for awhile, temping at secretarial jobs at UCSF while I "almost " got one ESL job after another -- funding would be lost, the person who hired me got fired, etc. I ran into my share of crystal meth freaks myself, although not job hunting. But I finally got a great job I loved & I'm sure you will, too. I'm so sorry we missed each other, though! -- hopefully see you at the next 'fest?
