Great to see you post again! A bunch of us are all going to the ballet at UCLA Friday night. We also thought about the Irvine show but with all the traffic, etc. we decided just to go to the one venue. Please post a review! Thanks to Mark in Seattle for the report, too. I imagine it will be mesmerizing. We will be getting our reports in late, I guess, due to extreme after-partying ;-) Anyone else, known or lurker, who wants to meet up with us at UCLA let us know! Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 2010 04:13:57 -0500 From: Subject: Troubadour Reunion Hi Mark, As Bob wrote, Joni was a big regular at the Troubadour back in the day. The club hosted everyone who was anyone in the late 60s, early 70s. It is still in operation but not as famed as back then. David Crosby (as per his autobiography, as I recall) got Joni booked there when he first brought her out to L.A. She played a few nights prior to release of Song to a Seagull and everyone went nuts over her. Instant stardom, so to speak. Pat Mead, who was an original member here, actually smuggled a reel to reel tape recorder in there one night in 1969 and recorded one of ther shows. It is a classic. It used to be distributed by tape tree but perhaps someone has uploaded it somewhere now for downloading. The Huffington Post featured an article speculating as to who the subject is in Carly Simon's song: According to an interpretation of a clip of a remastered version of "You're So Vain," Carly Simon named David Geffen as the target of the song. When the song is played backwards, at least as heard in the clip, a voice whispers "David."Geffen was the head of Simon's record label at the time, and was supposedly paying more attention to Joni Mitchell. That would mean it is not about exes Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger or Kris Kristofferson. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/26/david-geffen-is-youre-so_n_478110.ht ml Has anyone here heard this whisper before? Cary Simon has finally spilled the beans: it was not somer ex-lover who was so vain, but rather the then-head of her label, Elektra, a certain Mr. David Geffen, whom she felt was showering more attention and promotion on one of her rivals. Carly Simon Simon names who's 'So Vain' Feb. 26, 2010, 9:54 AM EST WENN- Carly Simon has ended nearly 40 years of speculation by finally naming the man who inspired her hit "You're So Vain" - her target was gay record label boss David Geffen. The song, which catapulted the singer to fame in 1972, was rumored to be about one of her ex-boyfriends, who include Hollywood legend Warren Beatty and rocker Sir Mick Jagger, but she had persistently refused to name the man behind the track. But Simon has now revealed who was so vain by giving fans a cryptic clue in an acoustic version of the song, which features on her upcoming album "Never Been Gone." She tells Uncut magazine, "You know what, I'm just going to tell you this. The answer is on the new version of 'You're So Vain,' on my new record 'Never Been Gone.' There's a little whisper and it's the answer to the puzzle." The singer whispers Geffen's name backwards in the track, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper. Geffen ran Simon's Elektra Records label at the time of the song's release and instead of being about a failed relationship, the lyrics are now thought to hint at the singer's lingering resentment after Geffen allegedly put more effort into promoting rival star Joni Mitchell.
