I am sure everyone here wishes they could have had the opportunity when they were in school to have had a teacher like you. I was totally engaged just reading your summary of the class. Are you going to teach the students another segment on Joni? I bet they would love it! LUVD IT I knew there were rumors Joni might perform, but it wasn't until I was driving home from work at 7am, listening to NPR that I heard them describe her section. I went right home & scanned my recording & am so glad I did not erase it. I thought the visuals of the ceremony were very evocative of the nature that is so important to Canadians. I was doubly thrilled to see Joni's prairie grasses & blue sky motiffs so well matched to the acrobat and her song, BSN. This sounded like a new recording to me...perhaps done for the Olympics. Any ideas anyone ? I was mesmerized. Floating boy flying & her words & voice soaring over the visuals. I thought it was more cohesive than the ballet TFATD. The ballet itself was good, the dancers were excellent, but I didn't think her visuals & the video projections really worked. Also, seeing a dvd of something meant to be seen live can reduce some meaning. Anyway, just my opinion. BTN really soared for me. I hope you get a chance to watch it. Last night I saw the episode with Elton John and Diana Krall, Diana talked about how listening almost exclusively to Joni helped her through her Mom's death, and she performed "A Case Of You". She has really had an impact on that song - it's amazing how many new covers of the tune reference her arrangement and vocal stylings. Looking forward to the next disc, it has the Herbie Hancock episode which is gonna have a BUNCH of Joni content. Mitchell's book of the same name. The opening poetry that was recited before they started playing Both Sides Now at the Vancouver Olympics opening ceremonies were from that book which reminded me of Joni's song. Here are the lyrics: Who has seen the wind scalloping the sea Or gliding like a swallow over villages and trees? "I have," said the willow, "And I begged him please to stay, but he went away, He went on his own one day." And I sing "One love have I," and he sings, "Now it's goodbye," And I sing "Part of me dies until I see you again." Who has seen the sun through a parasol of leaves, Through scattered ruby cloud fires, through the silver wings of bees? "I have," said the waters, "and I held his face to mine, But he left in time, he went in his own good time." And I sing "One love have I," and he sings, "Now it's goodbye," and I sing "Part of me dies until I see you again." Who has seen the stranger in a coat of simple brown, With his face of many faces, with his eyes turned out of town? I have and I kissed him and I begged him please to stay, But he went away, with the sun and the wind away. And I sing "One love have I," and he sings, "Now it's goodbye," and I sing "Part of me dies until i see you again" This is a beautiful song which is tuned in the same way as Song To A Seagull: CGCGCC My tab is ready I just have to type it up. Of course almost everyone repeated the same opinion on that line. To put things in perspective I think and this is only my opinion is that every artist draws upon life experiences and at that time that is what she must have felt or how she perceived life. That made her a very rich woman enough money to buy all the oils, canvas, cigarettes, drugs and men that money can buy. So she should be a very happy and contented woman. She plays the tortured artist role very well and invokes empathy or should I say sympathy from her fans. That was a long time ago, it seems that the most revealing lyrical line of Joni Mitchell is "If I had a heart I would cry." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 2010 14:01:15 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: BSN Olympic video I love that song. It is very beautiful and romantic. Learned it from the original (I think it was THE original) Joni Mitchell songbook, the one with the cover picture from "Clouds" and that includes a number of other never-released gems, such as "Jeremy," and the one about pink things (nuns/electric trees). Of course, they were in standard tuning but, as I had never heard them sung before, it didn't make that much difference to me at the time. I like the sound of all strings being tuned to only two different notes. It has a nice "droooooonnnne" sound, like the dulcimer. But it's still a pain to tune and retune. ________________________________ From: Susan Tierney McNamara To: "joni@smoe.org" Sent: Tue, February 16, 2010 3:21:09 PM Subject: RE: BSN Olympic video Circa 1966-67, Joni wrote a song called "Who Has Seen The Wind" that was inspired by Canadian writer W.O. I missed the broadcast on TV because of the time difference. It was on here at an inconvenient time and I didn't record it. I took Catherine's suggestion and downloaded a torrent of the NBC broadcast but it stopped short of this section. I was quite impressed by the whole show. It was created by one of Australia's most famous choreographers, David Atkins. He was responsible for the opening ceremonies for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has been the choreographer for the Athens Games and Beijing. He has a wonderful creative mind. I particularly enjoyed the different aspects of Canadian culture and landscape. I never really thought about a place when listening to Joni's, Both Sides, Now but to put it in perspective of her own homeland amongst the prairies gave me a wonderful new visual aspect. The vast wheat fields equating to, "Rows and flows of angel hair" would have pleased Joni. As would David's use of the arena floor as a giant canvas. Thank you, David for recognising Canada's greatest gift to the world: Joni Mitchell. The whales were amazing. As was the ice flows. Well done, David, well done, Vancouver, well done Canada. Is this true ? You , Willie Yannock. Can you really live every day hating a woman, any woman and think you have a heart? You too in your own way don't seem to "know" life at all. It's better to clean your own backyard, Willie. It's your heart that's at war right now and brimfull of bitterness. Your heart is your responsibility. Joni's is her's. Deal with it.
