[Michael O Subject: Re: 1988 Interview for Dutch radio, and Joni with a fake Tim Buckley in Coconut Grove Hey Bob and Lieve. I take great offence at your dissing of MSP. I adore this song. It came out just as I was rediscovering Joni's music and I happen to be a big fan of Peter Gabriel. The orchestrating of the two voices is nothing short of brilliant. This interview took place later the same year as Joni's only Australian promo tour, obviously for the same album. Because of that, MSP was played at every interview Joni did here too. I believe Joni did her promo tour in Australia around March and I think she went to Japan after Australia. ABC TV had the good sense to give the viewers a wider range of Joni's work than just MSP though, including excerpts from the Shadows and Light show. In her interview for Rock Arena, Joni gives some wonderful insight into the recording of My Secret Place and how Peter Gabriel got involved. You can read my transcript of that interview in the library of jm.com. I also have it on video and audio. Hopefully Les will post those on the site too. I am currently working on the transcript for Joni's interview for the Today Show on the Nine Network from the same tour. MSP is a decent song. I love Peter Gabriel but I don't think their vocals are a good blend as they both have the same sonic qualities and there's no contrast. Heck, the first time I heard it I didn't even know it was a duet - I was wondering why Joni sounded so weird in some parts. (I didn't buy the album, a friend did and he put it on tape for me so I didn't have any of the liner notes.) Happy Friday everybody! I do remember seeing the catalogue at the Toronto showing and thinking it was nicely done, but I just couldn't afford it at the time. I can't judge whether it was worth what they were charging for it or not, but it always comes down to, "What's it worth to you?" As well, it's a fairly limited edition book with lots of colour in it, and that costs. And if I remember correctly, they used all recycled paper, non-toxic inks and so on, so it's good for the environment. There was the basic catalogue, which was nice as it was, and then there was a limited edition one that cost a lot more. I believe the limited edition also included some prints that you could frame. Correct me if I'm wrong - it was a few years ago. In addition to a catalogue of her artwork, there are some fine photos of Joni, as you can see by the samples on the website. You could request an autographed copy (I believe they were having Joni sign these at whichever hotel or place she was staying at) and you'd go to pick up the autographed version a few days later (no extra charge.) I picked one up for Jamie Zoob in London, who sent me the money to get it, and then sent it off to him. It will be nice to get one of my own, even if it's not autographed. ________________________________ From: Les Irvin To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Fri, February 12, 2010 12:22:25 PM Subject: Green Flag song book Laura O reminded me that she uploaded photos of the book in question awhile back: http://jonimitchell.com/chronology/detail.cfm?id=1916 Thanks for the reminder Laura! I remember seeing them for sale at the event and thinking they were going to be $50 or so. I was a bit shocked when $175 was thrown out and, in fact, I think they were $225 if signed by Joni (could be wrong on that). Definitely a "collector's item" in the true sense of the word, I honestly bought mine thinking they would become highly sought after (and valuable) as the Mendel book has become. I think it'll be quite a few years before this book achieves that status, as Lev Moross (the publisher) told me he "needed the money" and was going to try to sell them on the internet. When I asked where/how on the internet, he had no idea. So, he's looking to unload but was VERY reluctant to go lower than $100 apiece unless "I" bought 100 or more. So far 10 people have indicated interest, if we can get 90 more I'll arrange the deal with him. Wow, so friggin' cool!! I just heard the orchestral version of BSN featured as part of the Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies show. Joni's voice beaming out to the entire world with the greatest beauty, accompanied by a fellow from the National Circus School interpreting the song as a dance, in a flying solo act. The crowd present seemed enraptured. Just magical ! Wasn't that amazing? I'm so glad I had no idea it was coming. There's nothing like a really good surprise. And did you catch the Alberta ballet dancing in the trees? More Joni connections! I'm so impressed with myself for recognizing their style before anyone said who they were. ________________________________ From: Michael O To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Fri, February 12, 2010 11:11:25 PM Subject: Worldwide Joni at the Winter Olympics!
