The interview with Joni was a joy to listen to, so no hardship there. I was first a bit confused because Joni mentions more songs then are actually chosen to be played, but anyway this is how ot goes: First the intro to the programme: Joni singing You Turn Me On I'm A Radio. Then Joni mentions classical music as a big influence. In particular, she raves about Stravinski's Rites of Spring, and asks for "Dance of the Adolescents" (if I heard right) to be played. But it is not played. Ditto with Rachmaninov. In fact, she says she does not really like his music, but she likes the music used for a film called (?) Story of Three Loves. Then the following songs are played, with lots of fantastic Joni chatter in-between (and Larry in the background): Miles Davis: It Never Entered My Mind Louis Jordan: Saturday Night Fish Fry Chuck Berry: Maybelline Bob Dylan: Memphis Blues Again Edith Piaf with Les Companions de la Chanson: Trois Cloches (3 bells) Billy Holiday: You've Changed Leonard Cohen: Suzanne Buffalo Springfield: Broken Arrow Jimi Hendrix: The Wind Cries Mary Sadly to me, the programme concluded with My Secret Place, Joni's choice from her own songs. I felt she chose a grain of sand amidst a whole plate of available pearls. But hey, it was as she said, from "my recent album" (CMIARS). I strongly urge everybody to give this interview a listen. Joni is in amazing form, talking freely about all sort of things. Let me just mention 2 highlights: 1) When discussing the Chuck Berry songs, she explains how she and friends would go to the local swimming pool and there dance in their swimsuits to the music. "We even got tanned under our armpits!" she says. I thought that was a wonderful description of these young girls, living it up in the way they could, daring and innocent all at once. 2) The bit that made me scream with laughter was her story of "the fake Tim Buckley and the green sunset". You have to listen for yourself (it is about 37 minutes into the programme) but it's just wonderful. It struck several personal chords with me, first of all because the only 2 discussion lists I have ever been on (as the result of some weird coincidences in my life), are the Tim Buckley list, and the JMDL. I have posted before about certain similarities between these 2 artists. But this story is quite different, because it's about a FAKE Tim Buckley! And it is set in Coconut Grove, which is the other personal link for me. About 15 years ago, I travelled with husband and sons to Florida. The boys were at that age where Orlando (with Disneyworld and all that) was the ultimate destination, so I got a good deal and off we went. But after a few days at all those theme parks, I was literally and figuratively sick of it, and negotiated a one-day-break where we would do something else. So we just drove out of Orlando, looking for a bit of beach. That is how we ended up in Coconut Grove, not knowing anything about its music connection. We stopped at a small cafe for a bite to eat in the evening, and as it happened there was just a karaoke session starting. I was feeling a bit reckless and put my name forward for Carly Simon's "You're so Vain". Husband was dreading seeing me make a fool of myself, sons were giggling. But I did not care and did it, and got a marvellous ovation from the locals, who were so friendly and came up to talk to me afterwards, saying how much they appreciated me doing this. I got the feeling they all knew each other, the atmosphere was really warm and there were a lot of good singers (a bit like a Jonifest!). I would have loved to have stayed longer, but we had a long journey back and so that was that. But it left me with a warm glow, and it was only afterwards that I heard that this was the place where Fred Neil lived, and where many other musicians had been hanging around (or were still hanging). Had I known, I would probably not have dared to open my mouth, but I'm glad I did. But I did not spot a fake Tim Buckley and I did not see a green sunset! As a native Dutch speaker, it was of course extra interesting for me, but there's enough English content (Joni speaking) to make it of interest to all readers. If anyone needs any more of the Dutch translated, do let me know. Bob, would you happen to have noted down the playlist of Joni's favourites? That would be nice to share. I know, as the Dutch saying goes, one fool can ask more in one day than 10 wise men can answer in a year, but this lazy fool can try, right? Thanks to our good friend Monica in Amsterdam I have the audio for an interview that Joni did in 1988 with Hubert van Hoof. I'm not sure exactly when the interview took place, but this was broadcast on September 6, 1988. It's very similar to the "My Top 12" broadcast Joni did in 1983 where she talks about her influences and favorite songs. Hubert speaks Dutch (of course), but Joni does the majority of the talking and plays lots of cool music. Even if you don't know Dutch you will find lots to enjoy. A lot of the same folks we've heard her talk about but some new stuff too. It runs 58 minutes. Hubert said of the experience: "I met Joni Mitchell at the Amstel Hotel. Due to a delay of TV shootings, my own radio interview was likely not to take place. Suddenly she came downstairs and asked if I wanted to have our conversation in her room while having lunch. And so we did and she talked not only about her favorite songs, but also about her spiritual experiences, which we happened to have in common." As for "My Secret Place", like you say she WAS on a promotional run for CMIARS so it would be expected that she would pull something from that record, weak though it may be. Hey, at least she didn't choose "Dancin' Clown", right?
