Thanks to our good friend Monica in Amsterdam I have the audio for an interview that Joni did in 1988 with Hubert van Hoof. I'm not sure exactly when the interview took place, but this was broadcast on September 6, 1988. It's very similar to the "My Top 12" broadcast Joni did in 1983 where she talks about her influences and favorite songs. Hubert speaks Dutch (of course), but Joni does the majority of the talking and plays lots of cool music. Even if you don't know Dutch you will find lots to enjoy. A lot of the same folks we've heard her talk about but some new stuff too. It runs 58 minutes. Hubert said of the experience: "I met Joni Mitchell at the Amstel Hotel. Due to a delay of TV shootings, my own radio interview was likely not to take place. Suddenly she came downstairs and asked if I wanted to have our conversation in her room while having lunch. And so we did and she talked not only about her favorite songs, but also about her spiritual experiences, which we happened to have in common." Don't say I didn't warn ya! ; ) I have been *relatively* quiet this past year, trying to get a good grip on my grief, but today this "love is a story told" calls out to be released. I'm trying to have more sense of humor, keeping the sadness at bay, throwing the lightness on these things, laughing it all awayyyyyyy. Some of you may remember how I stood in line for two hours (November 2008) to get Wally Lamb to sign his novel "The Hour I First Believed" for Smurf, and to ask him his question: "Did you know that Joni was NOT at Woodstock?" A long and lovely conversation ensued (much to the displeasure of the 50 or so people behind me in line!), where I told him all about Joni in Fiction and Smurf and his illness and all. He signed the book: "To Bob Murphy: I know THIS much is true...Joni was NOT at Woodstock...but maybe she was there in spirit? Wally Lamb" Kay and Ashley delivered that book to his bedside, and his last text message to me read: "From: Smurf. PP, you really outdid yurelf with my wonderful gift. Thanks! I love you. Received: Sun, Nov 23 5:23 a.m." Jody told me that that book ("THE BOOK!", she called it) was always on his nightstand, from Mass. General Hospital to hospice and back to Mass. General Hospital again. Okay. Flash forward (while the painted ponies go up and down and the carousel thing begins to whirrrr) to November, 2009. Wally's got another book out, so I am there. "Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story." (Dusty lyrics! And Annette Funicello is in this one, just for you, Chuck E.!) This time, I decided to write Wally a letter, telling him all about Smurf and how much the book meant to him, so I wouldn't monopolize his time again. I told him all Smurf's troubles, I told him all his charms. (My Old Man. We don't need a piece of paper from the city hall, keeping us tied and true.) I told him all about my JMOCD, and dropped many a lyric in there. Luckily for Wally, I wrote it at the end of the workday, just before the book launch. Hence, it was only two pages long. Ha! After his talk (which was a hoot!), when it was finally my turn, I dropped the letter on the table. He looked up at me and said: "I remember you! You're the Joni Mitchell person!" I smiled and said: "I want to knit you a sweater, I want to write you a love letter, so I did." He laughed and said: "Wow! You wrote ME a love letter? Thank you! Now I"ll just be waitin' on the sweater." (Sue Tierney, can you knit him a sweater from the JMDL?) To make a long story short, we had another lovely conversation, and he signed my book, as requested: "For Patti Smurf the JMDL! My best to you and everyone you love, Wally Lamb, November 9, 2009" That's got us ALL covered! :) My best to you, may your skies be blue! Now, here's the best part -- the heart of the matter -- of this "love is a story told", for anyone who has made it this far. Last month, a picture postcard charm was delivered to my mailbox, as the winter days unfold. It was the end of a hard day's night of work work work, and i had the blues inside and outside my head, but this little gift made me "oh honey, you turn me ON!" I'm as bright as a neon light now... A message from Wally, in his finest hand! Voila: "Jan. 7, '10 Hi, Patti -- I really enjoyed your letter and seeing you at the Co-op several weeks back. Given all this Storrs snow & these frigid temps, I can't wait for "the hissing of summer lawns." Long live your fond memories of Bob Murphy & may he rest in peace. Yours, Wally ("What a strange, strange boy.") See? I've got JMOLQD, too. Must be catchy!" ***** How Joni cool is THAT? He likes it! Smurfy likes it! (We were always joking about commercials. "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't." "Mothers are like that. Yeah, they are!") Okay, I will sign off now, before I burn out right here before you. Laughing and crying, you know it's the same release of love for our Smurfadelica, the best JMDL baby we everrrrr had. XOXOXOSMURFJMDLXOXXO (that's a big Smurfy he-pins-me-in-the-corner-and-he-won't-take-no hug), Patti P., a.k.a. Shirley Yu (what a faithful thankful girl I be) P.S. Loving all the Smurf tributes and photo beauties and memories on FB today and yesterday. All My Loving, I will send to Yuuuuuu....Let these walls come tumbling down for all to enjoy as we all SHINE on, like the moon and the stars and the sun... P.P.S. Happy birthday to Ms. Marianne Treegreen Rizzo! *Do* let up the sorrow Death and birth and death and birth He says "Bring that bottle kindly And I'll pad your purse ....with Joni lyrics! Sure enough... Odd, because I kept thinking it was closer to Valentine's Day. But WHAM! Bob popped into my head today like lightning, right in the middle of my doing nothing in particular. I'm convinced his spirit lives on. I'm not sure all souls do, but I surely believe his does. Sending up my prayers - to Bob? He'd get a chuckle out of that. lots of love, Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Feb 2010 17:56:44 -0800 (PST) From: Mags Subject: Re: Smurf, Wally Lamb, and Joni: Laughing and crying my lovely friend Anne wrote: I'm convinced his spirit lives on.
