Hey Bob and everyone. I'm still listening to covers 121 but I wanted to share some of my thoughts and appreciation. Firstly, I was anxious to hear another cover of TGR. Tom Wopat is a singer now? When did this happen? He's got quite a good voice. It's a shame the "Good ole boy" felt the need to remove any gayness from the lyrics. Just wouldn't do down in Hazard County. Very nice cover of the Tea Leaf Prophecy. It's neck and neck between this one and Cris Williamson's for me. I always find it interesting to hear a male take on a Joni Mitchell song. After the comments about Kathy Moser's, BYT, I had to listen to that one next. Excellent. I'm not sure that it's quite Klezmer style though. Is that really her influence? Mozeltoff! I love Milagro's cover of Roses Blue. It's probably slightly more upbeat than Joni's. Nice collection, Bob. From Tom Wopat's official site: "Wopat first started singing and dancing in high school musicals, and studied music at the University of Wisconsin before making his television debut in 1978." So like I said in my write-up, he was a song and dance guy before DoH, And returned back to the musical stage when the show was done, and he is a Tony Award nominee so it's not like he's an TV star trying his hand at singing. As to the lyric change, I'm neither going to defend or chastise him for it; if changing the word from 'shirt' to 'hair' meant that we get a TGR cover as opposed to another BSN, I'm all for it. It is funny though, if you read his bio there are a couple of references to his "manly sensitivity" and his "manly grace". Mark, Tom has always been a great singer. He has 7 cd's out and has starred in many Broadway musicals, once Tony nominated. I saw him in Annie Get Your Gun and A Catered Affair. He was excellent in both. As a side note, I met his younger brother once in Indianapolis. He is a singer sonwriter, and HUGE fan of Joni's. I know, I know. It's tough being a superstar. I do burn them to CD, but I don't keep my burned CDs in cases anymore, because I have too many and they take up too much space. i just keep them on the spindles the CDRs come in. Every so often, I attempt to organize them, but it's a project that could take weeks. But I have to do it; otherwise, I'd have no idea where to find them. As it is, I've got CDs in various locations. I try to keep them in alphamabetical order (I keep all the Joni covers together) but, whenever I take one out to play, I don't feel like putting it back where it was, so I have a few bins full of "overflow." I keep the comments on each as a file on my computer. If there's artwork, I'd still like to get it and I'm sure others would too (like, you need more work). I'd keep that as an e-file, in the event I ever move into a place that's big enough, and has enough shelves in it, to keep my stuff all in one place. Maybe by the time I'm 85, there'll be some order to it all, and then my kids will throw them out or donate them to Goodwill. ________________________________ From: "Bob.Muller@Fluor.com" To: Catherine McKay Cc: FMYFL@aol.com; joni@smoe.org Sent: Thu, February 4, 2010 7:39:44 AM Subject: Re: Joni Covers, Volume 121 - 4 more weeks of Joni Covers! I've started putting my CDRs in CD sized envelopes (should be able to buy them where ever you buy your CDRs). It takes the minimum space that CDRs can take and they're fairly easy to organize. If you liked the Elvis Costello version - I bet you will like this version even better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_D7d-yQiEU If your a Diana Krall fan I recommend her new album " Quiet Nights". Fred "Papa" Mendel was the art-loving patriarch of Intercontinental Meat Packers, one of Saskatoon's mainstay industries for much of the 20th century. As a child growing up in Saskatoon in the 1950s, Roberta Joan Anderson, as Ms. Mitchell was then known, was a regular visitor to the Mendel household because of her friendship with some of Fred's grandchildren. It was at that house that Mitchell first saw the masters - -- Picasso and Matisse from Europe, the Group of Seven from Canada -- and developed a desire to follow in their footsteps. ~~http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=535&from=search~~ It was a homecoming for Joni Mitchell Friday as she launched her first Canadian art exhibition at the Mendel Art Gallery. The musician, poet and painter, who lives in Los Angeles, said it was important she open the show in Saskatoon. "For one, Papa Mendel, who donated this museum, was the grandfather of a friend of mine in high school and we partied at his house," she said of gallery founder Fred Mendel. "So the first great paintings that I got a chance to see, Picasso's and Matisse's, were at Grandpa Mendel's house." ~~http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=560&from=search~~ Laura ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Feb 2010 20:06:27 -0800 (PST) From: M C Subject: VHS tapes of Joni available Hello JMDL, I'm cleaning out and I have 5 Joni VHS tapes I'm letting go for the cost of shipping, $2.35 US dollars. Here's what I have: "Painting With Words And Music" I purchased this copy. There is a constant banner on the bottom of the screen saying "for screening purposes only". Joni on the Rosie O'Donnell show on 4/10/2000, a few months after "Both Sides Now" was released. She sings "Both Sides Now" and "Answer Me, My Love", and talks with Rosie. I taped this from my TV. I'm hoping someone from "The Staff" can transfer this to the Joni site; I won't ask for shipping cost in this case. The rest are copies I got from members of the list. "TNT All-Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" "Refuge of the Roads" "Woman of Heart and Mind" Contact me off list if you are interested.
