I hope this helps to clarify some of the confusion regarding Joni's illness. Thank you all for being supportive of all that Joni is going through. Cindy Casey, RN Director The Charles E. Holman Foundation www.thenmo.org I have been shocked and extremely saddened since learning of Joni being infected with Morgellons Disease Too many people are coming to this same agonizing reality everyday. The numbers are increasing exponentially. This nightmare of an illness creates fatigue and weakness so consuming that it is like waking up from anesthesia. However, the pain experienced is not dulled one bit by this fatugue. The disease that Ms. Mitchell has is very real, debilitating, and life altering. I know first-hand since I have Morgellons. I am, also, one of the many Registered Nurses (lic. 33 yrs) afflicted. At my onset, I was working for the local Public Health Department as a Community Health Nurse (14 yrs) and before that I worked as Charge Nurse in the Cardio-vascular/ pulmonary sub-acute units at a major hospital. I was forced into taking a medical disability leave in 2002 due to Morgellons. In 2003, I was the fourth patient in the U.S. to be diagnosed with Morgellons. It was not easy, but I was fortunate to have located a doctor willing to try to treat Morgellons. Most patients have been left struggling without any such help. Even with medical management, my symptoms continue, although, not as severe. I have come to realize the best we can hope for is a "plateau" or remission until research provides answers. Morgellons is a multi-symptom disease also referred to as the 'Fiber Disease'. It is not just a skin condition or an allergic reaction or imagined. This is a very real and serious medical condition. Medical research formally started in 2005 at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa by Dr. Randy Wymore. The most unique feature of this disease is the fibers/filaments, which develop in the (intact & unbroken) skin. The list for signs & symptoms of Morgellons can be read at http://www.thenmo.org/faqs.htm Primary Symptoms Include: X -Spontaneously Erupting Skin lesions X Granules & fiber-like filaments (hair-like ranging in color from clear, black, brown, red, blue and green) beneath and/or extruding from the skin X -Sensation of crawling, biting on and under the skin X -Fatigue X -CNS/Neurological impairment X -Short-term memory loss X -Attention Deficit, Bipolar or Obsessive-Compulsive disorders X -Impaired thought processing (brain fog) X -Depression and feelings of isolation X Mild to severe impairment in higher cognitive abilities & skills The Mayo Clinic, NIH, & CDC have recognized the reality of Morgellons Disease as a physiological illness and "an emerging health concern." Each of these esteemed medical establishments has Morgellons Disease information on their web sites. The CDC is nearing the end of an (initial) investigational research study and, officially, sent out letters to all State Medical Associations December 16. 2008. Fast-track research takes $$$$$$ which we do not have. Volunteer researchers donate their professional skills & resources, but have obligations to full-time jobs. Dr. Randy Wymore has teaching responsibilities in OSU Medical School. He gives as much as he possibly can to our research. He believes in Morgellons and his efforts helped us with the initiation of real, medically-science based research. One obstacle stands in the way of our progress: funding. Research is expensive. If we had funds ... we could have full time research. With research, answers will come. Those infected could be properly medically managed. Perhaps the best thing that would come as result of research, others would be prevented from contracting this or, at the very least, be able to receive proper treatment early in the disease. I am proud to volunteer with The Charles E. Holman Foundation. This organization is dedicated to raising funds for research, to patient support & helping with referrals to medical providers whenever possible, and serving as an educational resource for other medical professionals. The website is thenmo.org. They are rapidly being recognized as The National Morgellons Organization for their determination & ongoing efforts. The 3rd Annual Morgellons Medical/Scientific Conference is March 27, 2010. Updated information and details will be on the website as they become available. I encourage Ms. Collins, her fans and anyone that wants to learn more about Morgellons or help with our fight, to please contact thenmo.org via the website. Anyone may certainly contact me at sunnyand7777@yahoo.com. We need everyone to get involved in any way possible-donations, awareness drives, fund raising ideas, volunteering their skill /talents or just being a true friend to someone that may have Morgellons. Joni, I pray that you are winning this battle. All of us are in this fight for our very lives and desperately need help to win. With sincerest of concern for Joni Mitchell and all Morgellons victims throughout the world, Gwen "Sunny" Simmons, R.N. http://www.thenmo.org/motm.htm (See Jan' 08) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 2010 22:10:25 -0600 From: "Cindy Casey RN" Subject: Morgellons Media Alert Presenting........
