We're all feeling a little melancholy today. Suze, I'd support some sort of recognition to those who contribute. I must admit, I'm not the most prolific donator but, that's due more to financial struggles than laziness or anything else. I like to think I contribute in other ways - - my wallpapers page or to help out Bob Muller or to transcribe a Joni interview, etc. By the way, Catherine, John Low is more or less an occasional lurker these days. I corresponded with him a few months ago regarding OzFest. He suggested holding it in the Blue Mountains, where he resides. That's just west of Sydney. Gorgeous place. You get a great sense of the Blue Mountains in the movie, Sirens - the movie about the artist, Norman Lindsey starring Elle Macpherson, Portia De Rossi, Kate Fisher, Hugh Grant and Sam Neil. You'll see Rosellas in it too. They are stunningly beautiful birds - bright red with green wing tips. They are in the parrot family. They were the symbol for Rosella Soups. Anyway, if we can get enough people together in the future sometime, I'd look at the Blue Mountains first. Anyway, I've been on this list since about 1997 but, my memory doesn't stretch very far. I dropped out for several years because of all the flaming that went on back then. I was at uni at the time and felt that I needed to be studying anyway. Lieve, I hate vinyl. I embraced digital technology from day one. I don't possess anything that can play analogue formats anymore but, I'm stuck with a few records. I haven't ditched them yet because there are a couple that are not available on CD yet. As soon as I can get them transferred, they're gone. Happy hunting. (.......) And now comes the Joni content. I also bought 14 editions of a magazine called Record Collector, dating back to the '80s. They were advertised as containing information about all Beatles records. Out of curiosity I just grabbed the top one, and the page opened on a picture of a young Joni. I saw there was actually a very long article (my rough estimate about 9000 words), titled "Joni MITCHELL - Influential singer and songwriter whose recent work has taken in rock, folk, pop and jazz". The author is Debbie Pead, and the article is basically a potted biography and discography. There are 3 photos, and a list of all her records, singles and albums, with a "current mint value". So in October 1984, most of her singles were valued at #2, but her first single, Night in the City/I had a King (1968) is valued at twice that much (#4). Most albums are valued at #4 or #5, but the following ones get a #7 value: Songs to a Seagull, Clouds, Miles of Isles and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. My question, to Les or anybody else, is: would you like this article for the website? Do you want me to scan it in or type it out or both? I had given him a vinyl copy of DJRD about a year ago (he has a turntable and collects old vinyl as well), and we played Cotton Avenue and all of side 3. He really enjoyed Tenth World and the separation of the sounds in the speakers. I hadn't heard the album played straight through in a while and had sort of forgotten how the three songs (Otis & Marlena, 10th World, Dreamland) blend together so well, and makes it sound like a suite. We talked a lot about Joni and about DJRD in particular. He commented about how pristine the album was, and I stated that probably whoever bought it originally played it once and hated it and never played it again! He also asked me why one album was sides 1 and 4 and the other was 2 and 3 and I talked about how people would load 5-6 records on a spindle and drop one on top of another. Brought back a lot of great memories. What fun. I always like it when Joni shows up to an event in Canada. It makes me feel proud. I'm also imagining the opening night of the ballet in Los Angeles in February. What a star-studded gala that night will be! I imagine it will be so gratifying for Joni to be surrounded by her many fans and friends on this special occasion in her home town. Wish I could be a part of it. Here is part of the theater's online advert for the ballet: 'Joni Mitchell is scheduled to participate in the post-show Q&A, which is included with the show ticket.' And on top of that, Rickie Lee Jones is scheduled to appear at the Triple Door on February 19th. Here is the first paragraph of that online advertisement: 'Once touted as the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones proved no less idiosyncratic or mercurial; like Mitchell, Jones experienced significant commercial success at the outset of her career, but a restless creative spirit -- combined with a stubborn refusal to fit comfortably into any one musical niche -- sealed her ultimate destiny as that of a highly regarded cult heroine.' I wonder what either of these women would have to say about that? Life is good. How difficult would it be to show a little love each month to help him out? I would be the first one willing to lead by example. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 21:46:36 EST From: passscribe@aol.com Subject: Re: Vinyl & old music magazines > From: Lieve Reckers > Subject: JM article in Record Collector magazine (1984) > > One of my brothers in Belgium collects old vinyl. I actually play my records more than my CDs simply because there are more of them to choose from and more rare/special records than CDs. Besides, I love to hold a gatefold album cover and read the lyrics and liner notes without a magnifying glass. Likewise, over the years, I've also picked up and kept many music/record magazines and have kept those which contained articles on those artists that interest me (including Joni). I don't read them often, but they are there if I decide to.
