Or rather, he started buying records like most of us in the late '60s and '70s, but even though in due course he got a CD player, he never stopped extending his vinyl collection of music of that period, as if he was buying, 20 or 30 years later, those records that he would have bought at the time if he could have afforded it. For a while it was easy and cheap, because many people were throwing their vinyl out and my brother could pick it up almost for free. By now, vinyl is in demand again, and my brother is vying with many other collectors to pick up treasures on jumble sales and in second hand shops, at ever increasing prices. As I've mentioned before, I live near to an auction place in London, where they sell mainly house clearances (after people die or emigrate or downsize). I like to have a look around there every week, and now and then I get myself a little bargain like an old mirror or an antique ring. So it was only a small step to become my brother's "agent", unpaid of course and just for fun. It gives me a sort of (bloodless) hunter's thrill to see what records I can catch for him. And today, as most days, I got some and narrowly lost some within the price limits that my brother had given me. (Got: 6 Pink Floyds, 9 Doors, 5 Stones, 3 Neil Young, 2 CSN&Y and 1 Marley. Lost out on some good Beatles and a great collection of various blues and rock such as Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Grateful Dead.) And now comes the Joni content. I also bought 14 editions of a magazine called Record Collector, dating back to the '80s. They were advertised as containing information about all Beatles records. Out of curiosity I just grabbed the top one, and the page opened on a picture of a young Joni. I saw there was actually a very long article (my rough estimate about 9000 words), titled "Joni MITCHELL - Influential singer and songwriter whose recent work has taken in rock, folk, pop and jazz". The author is Debbie Pead, and the article is basically a potted biography and discography. There are 3 photos, and a list of all her records, singles and albums, with a "current mint value". So in October 1984, most of her singles were valued at #2, but her first single, Night in the City/I had a King (1968) is valued at twice that much (#4). Most albums are valued at #4 or #5, but the following ones get a #7 value: Songs to a Seagull, Clouds, Miles of Isles and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. My question, to Les or anybody else, is: would you like this article for the website? Do you want me to scan it in or type it out or both? This site has brought so much into my life; new friends, new music, new travel experiences, etc. Rather than waiting until the end of the year to show Les our support, maybe we could set up something right off the bat, and have a JMDL 'member of the month' to commemorate the person who contributes the most or whatever we can come up with. I know that Les works hard to keep both this site and jonimitchell.com going. How difficult would it be to show a little love each month to help him out? I would be the first one willing to lead by example. Happy New JMDL year! Suze n.p. There are times the jmdl pisses me off, but that's probably more a reflection of my own weird and changeable and sometimes paranoid state of mind on any given day than related to what anyone else says or does. For the most part, I am very grateful to have ever stumbled upon this site. A while back, I searched the archives and found my original post and I've included the text below. Things have not changed much in so many ways! As I read through, I remember that it was one of our Aussie members (John Low - are you still here?) who wrote about rosellas, which, as I discovered, are a type of bird. As well, there was some sort of argument or flame war going on at the time, but I don't know what it was about. As to my reference at the end to hating anagrams, I really meant acronyms. I hate them then and I hate them now (are you listening, Jimmy Stewart, you SOB? LOL!) In fact, I hate them so much, I can't even remember what they're called. I've made lots of friends here, some of whom I've met in person. I think they're all wonderful, funny, insightful (and sometimes inciteful) people that I feel privileged to have met. Sometimes I think of people that used to be here and who have left us one way or another and I miss them, dammit! - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 19:25:15 GMT From: Catherine McKay Subject: Bickering, back&forthing and other stuff (extremely little Joni content) I'm new to the list, but not new as a Joni fan. I've loved her stuff since I was 14 and I won't tell you how long ago THAT was because I'm trying to forget and oblivion is a long way off.) I've just come onto the list, so am not familiar with some of what's gone on before, but all the back-and-forthing is in a very twisted way delightful to me. I would be rolling in the aisles if there were aisles to roll in. It all reminds me so much of home. I am the 3rd of 5 children (so I have middle-child syndrome) and remember sitting around the supper table arguing about anything possible. It used to drive my Mum nuts but now I'm being punished because I've got kids of my own, and guess what? I have to admit, there's nothing like a good argument to get the blood circulating. There are 2 things my Dad used to say on that subject(and I know for sure the first wasn't an original line that he created): 1. "Nothing succeeds like excess" and 2. "Name your subject [and we'll argue about it]". I didn't arrive in time to hear (read?) the original joke which appears to reference human anatomy et al that set the whole thing off (it's OK, REALLY, I am truly NOT trying to start anything! it all becomes irrelevant after a time) Little does it matter. A good free-for-all is not to be missed. (Must be the Irish blood.) Before subscribing, I had never heard of a rosella (I thought it was a new disease, a cross between rubella and roseola!) and I thought the Joni sighting in the Blue Mountains referred to the ones near Collingwood (Ontario. Canada.) Which tells you where I'm from. So thanks to whoever-it-was that mentioned it because I've learned something new today. Sorry if I'm not quoting/referencing/anagramming appropriately or enough. I don't know what half that stuff means and I really hate anagrams. I hear far too many of them in my work as it is. My intentions are good and the road to hell is paved with them. ________________________________ From: "scam1@freeway.net" To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Sat, January 9, 2010 6:27:42 PM Subject: jmdl support I was thinking the other day how happy it made me feel to see the JMDL Digest V2010 #1 in my mailbox.
