We have never indulged in that madness, however. Some years back, and for about 5 or 6 years, we used to take the train into the city and have dinner at Monte's, a great little Italian restaurant on Macdougal Street in Greenwich Village, then walk four blocks east to The Bottom Line to see Flo & Eddie (and the "new" Turtles). Those were great times! Monte's owner, Giovanni, retired a couple of years ago and the Bottom Line closed a couple of years before that so, last night, we went out for dinner to a nice nearby restaurant at about 7:30 PM with 7 other friends, then back to our house by 11 PM to watch the ball drop on TV and share after dinner drinks with everyone. Four other friends dropped by after midnight to go in our hot tub (I was in twice, earlier in the day). BSN 69 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 11:30:52 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Ring in the new decade with Joni Covers - Volume 120 now open for business! Howdy hey all, and here we go again with the first edition of Joni covers for the new year/decade. And it's a nice crop of tunes to be sure. Thanks to those of you who pointed me in the right direction and/or sent me a track. With my undercover section of JM.com currently unavailable, I don't have access to a lot of information to do my write-up. So, I'd just ask you to download, listen, and check back for more information on the songs you like if you want more details. You can find the download here: http://tinyurl.com/y9kgm7f And here's what's on it: 1. Joe Moe - Car On A Hill: A GREAT start to #120 - firstly, it's a seldom-done song, secondly, it's a solid combination of the composition and an individual treatment, thirdly, it's an interesting gender switch to have a male voice singing it without changing the words. Joe's voice has a clarity and warmth to it, and there are lots of nice colorations throughout, just as in Joni's recording. 2. Bei Xu - Both Sides Now: At over 7 minutes long, this one is not your typical BSN cover. Originally from China, Bei Xu moved to the USA 10 years ago and is currently a jazz singer in NYC. You hear traces of an accent but not much. She's also really really pretty. 3. Charlie Dee - Woman Of Heart And Mind: Hopefully you've checked out Charlie's Joni Tribute CD by now - we played it on the road to Idyllwild last year, shortly after it came out. At the time I was making these compilations I was unaware that she was going to release a full CD of her concert...anyway, here is a nice sampling of Dutch jazz singer Dee and her wonderful band, performing a rarely-covered Joni treasure. More coming so stay tuned. 4. Flash Connection - Big Yellow Taxi 5. Flash Connection - Carey: Flash Connection is a German duo, they are big Joni fans and include these two Joni songs on their CD. 6. Adam Linsley - Both Sides Now: No, it's not Adam singing...it's Mim Grey. Adam is a trumpet/flugelhorn player from the UK. This is a pleasant recording of the franchise. 7. William Gamble - Cactus Tree: Also different to hear a male voice on this one; William's vocal is a good fit for this song, has a very fragile sound to it and I have to say that he does falter a little at times. Hailing from Minnesota, William is also a novelist. This is from his 2008 album. 8. Anita Wardell - Twisted: Anita's been a professional jazz singer for about 15 years, specializing in vocalese and such just like Twisted. Born in the UK, she moved to Australia at an early age. She brings a unique touch to this one throwing in lots of original scatting. 9. Helen Russell - River: Another NYC talent, this comes from Helen's 2008 holiday album, titled "Holly Days". She has a background in acapella and adds some nice harmonies as a result. 10. Patricia Daly - Both Sides Now: From Ireland, besides her singing Patricia is also an award-winning harpist. I love her accent. Very simple and lovely - if you enjoy the Celtic sound you will like this one. 11. Sonya Heller - Woodstock: From 2009, Sonya's Woodstock is a free-flowing track, reminds me a lot of Laura Nyro in the sound of her voice and her soulfulness and blending of pop, jazz and soul sounds. I like this one a lot and think that you will too. 12. J-Min - Big Yellow Taxi: More Japanese Joni, nicely done on this 2007 recording. Some fine guitar and percussion work too! 13. Bill Barwick - Urge For Goin': Bill is a gen-yoo-wine cowboy from Denver and does a fine job of UFG, his rugged vocal giving an authenticity to the sound, complemented by some fine guitar and pedal steel. From one of his earlier albums, "Cowboys, Liars & Lovers". 14. Roger Whittaker - From Both Sides Now: Unfortunately for us, Roger recorded and released BSN twice, this studio version and a live version. We've had the live one for a long time, I figured I'd go ahead and put this one out there and put it past us. Cheese with a capital C, but he has millions of fans so there ya go. 15. Anne Hampton Callaway - Carey: Anne needs no introduction to most of you; musical and cabaret artist, this swinging jazzy rendition of Carey is fun and oh so fine. Comes from her most recent release, "At Last". 16. Lee Bach - Woodstock: From 1977, this one is pretty rare and obscure, and that's not a bad thing. Lee's voice has a tad too much vibrato for my tastes and grates a bit as well. 17. Erlend Bratland - River: An 18-year old from Norway, Erland has an amazingly beautiful voice and wonderful phrasing and clarity for someone so young. But he's been singing and performing for awhile and was also the winner of a Norwegian talent contest called 'Norske Talenter'. This version of River is very very nice. 18. The Aurora Singers - Both Sides Now: Not sure of the time frame on this one, most likely late 60's/early 70's. The sound is dated but I have to say that for a choral sound they're not too bad. And there you have it - another collection of old, new, fantastic and not-so-much, and spanning the globe. Hope you enjoy it, I'd love to hear what you think.
